Nortwestern fires Bill Carmody

I would've thought that if you were going to fire Carmody, that last year may have been the year to do it. Seems they had the personnel a year ago and didn't get it done. Not sure how much he could have done with this year's team given all their injuries. As of today, I might've been inclined to give him one more year, all things considered.

On a side note, the last two teams that Iowa has beaten in the BTT have been the last game as said team's coach:

2012 BTT: Iowa beats Illinois - Bruce Weber fired.
2013 BTT: Iowa beats Northwestern - Bill Carmody fired.

Hard to say if Collins will take that job. NW is a really tough place to win.

Chris Collins would worry me, but why in the heck would he want that job? Northwestern is a grave yard for basketball coaches.

This sends Northwestern back to the abyss, where they belong.

Bruce Weber = Big 12 Coach of the Year this year. Carmody? :)

why in the world would a young up-and-coming assistant like Collins take a job with the worst team in the best conference (who also has the highest academic standards)?

jNW is going to suck for a long time now. glad we don't have to worry about them.

Drake better call Carmody ASAP.

If you can win in football at Northwestern, you can win at basketball. Just have to find the right guy. Given the track record of Coach K's pup(s), Collins may not be the answer even with his pedigree, but there is someone out there.

While I hope/think that you are right that NW will suck for a long time to come (I'll take all the easy W's I can get in this damned conference!), it's kind of ironic to me personally that they are (allegedly) considering a Duke assistant, as I've often wondered how different Duke & NW really are on paper.

Granted, I know Duke had a pretty strong (certainly much stronger than NW) bball tradition pre-Coach K, but consider:

1) Small private school (both teams, check)
2) Play in a conference much larger public schools (both teams, check)
3) High academic standards (both teams, check)
4) Located near large, basketball-rich metropolitan areas (both teams, check - NW, obviously Chicago...Duke, the "Tech Triangle" or whatever they call it out there and pretty easy access to a lot of the Atlantic seaboard)

I'll say it again for emphasis - in college sports, like in a lot of things in life, past performance is often one of the best (if not the best) predictor of future performance. NW sucks and has sucked since pretty much the beginning of time...HOWEVER, it wouldn't be too hard to imagine that a Duke assistant might recognize some of the same parallels I just pointed out above & be willing to give it a shot.

^ agree for the most part, but that is true with pretty much any school. if you can get a great coach, the recruits will come and you can win. but jNW is going to have to get an unproven guy or someone who's never been in a big conference. and your chances of striking gold will be significantly lower on that.

Really can't argue with any of this... ^

Sometimes you just have to suck it up and realize you aren't going to be any better. It's like ISU football with Rhoads. Sure as fans you want to do better, in Northwestern's case it would be the NCAA tournament, in ISU's case it would be going to a bowl game that people have heard of, but it's just not going to happen for either of their programs. The fans have unrealistic expectations. Your program sucks plain and simple. You just have to accept these things.

Despite the fact it's Northwestern, I could honestly see an up and coming coach try to make a name for himself by taking on the challenge of getting Northwestern dancing. Let's be honest, if he succeeds think of what it could do for future job opportunities and if he fails he'd most likely end up at a mid major. If he's arrogant and young, I see the possibilities.

The biggest difference between Duke and NW is that Duke's entrance requirements for athletes are much easier than NWs.

Stanford has done fine in both sports.

With that said, stupid move. Joins the ranks of other memorable stupid firings:

Tom Davis
Mike Davis
Mason
Solich
T. Smith (twice now)

As far as the coach...no lose situation for him.

Build a winner, and he walks on water.
Flail around, and, oh, well, it's NU.

I see no downside.

i guess you're right there. but wow is it the arguably worst school in the best conference. nowhere to go but up?
