Norm's comments

Did it bother anyone else when Norm essentially said in the paper the other day "It's not so much about winning and losing it's more about hanging with the guys for me..." I'm sorry but we pay Norm to care about winning and losing and if that's his attitude...Norm can go down to the bar and "hang with the guys."

Weren't those comments in response to being asked what he likes most about coaching? They didn't bother me a bit.

I didn't hear or read his comments, but I assume he is trying to say that the wins will come as a result of doing all of the "little things" behind the scenes. If you focus only on the wins and losses as a coach it will be one long roller coaster ride.

I don't think Norm was trying to say that his social life is more important than the teams W-L record.

I'm amazed at how some try to read between the lines (or insert meaning) on virtually everything that KFz or Norm or .... says.

This is a guy who has been looking his own mortality in the face for a couple years, and he lost a limb. He misses being with his guys. That's pretty clearly the point.

You'll note that he also said, paraphrasing..."this is where I want to be, this is what I'm meant to be doing". Sounds like a guy with a deep passion for his craft...not somebody who's OK with just showing up.

so if you're on your death bed, what would you miss more...a win, or hanging out with your best friends doing what you love the most which could result in a win?

don't change the context of what he meant

i'm sure it bothered the shallow. Those who can't see beyond the tip of their nose.

It bothered those fans who sit behind me in Kinnick - you know who you are. Constantly biatching about Norm 'not blitzing' or KOK should really be KK because he takes the O out of offense, or those who complain that Iowa is 'too predictable'..........

yeah, I'm sure it bothered many in the iowa fan base.....but it shouldn't have.....do you think a guy who is that invested in the team, in the players, in the coaches, doesn't care about losing? yeah, right.

Get the context right before you post something like this.

Any coach who cares about "winning" will have a tough time doing it. They should care about focus, teamwork, and execution. Winning is a byproduct of those things.

Norm's comment had everything to do with his health, which I was in his shoes I would want to do what makes me happy and if it's coaching the Hawkeye defense then that is what I would do!

It seems to me that is exactly what most retired pro athletes say when asked what they miss most about the game.

Norm essentially said in the paper the other day "It's not so much about winning and losing it's more about hanging... the guys for me..."

I believe what Norm is referring to was his early "lynch mob" days in Iowa. Extrajudicial execution by hanging was a popular way to handle criminals.

Lynch Law in Iowa. - HANGING OF A MURDERER BY THE MOB. - Article - NYTimes.com

Was it appropriate? No... But that is Norm being Norm.

It's not about the winning. Its about handling those who stole games from us this year.

I think when you have serious health issues and go through what Norm has you start to appreciate the "little things" like being able to be at the game and work with the players.....put things in perspective a bit you jackwagons. The man has had serious medical issues and your upset because winning isn't "the most important thing".......Get a life and get some values. I love the hawks but some of this is really over the top at times....

I had the fortune to meet Norm on two occasions during two Polk County I-Club events. I think the OP is looking too much into this. Norm is just a regular guy. For Norm, hanging with the guys IS the type of guy he is. Football is his life. While I don't know the full context of the conversation, I think Norm was just putting things into perspective. That this is just a game and other things in life are more important than a game.
