Non-Conference TV Info

I was wondering the same thing. I'm pretty sure you have to get your internet through a cable company also to stream it. Might be the first time I am scrambling to watch the games. It was easier just getting the BTN subscription and streaming that.

You are correct. ESPN3 requires an agreement with your Internet provider. Mediacom has this, so does South Slope. Not sure on others.

Full non-conference TV schedule is finalized.

11/3: Augustana (Exhibition) - Mediacom22 & BTDN (Big Ten Digital Network)
11/8: UNC Wilmington - ESPN3
11/10: Nebraska-Omaha - ESPN3
11/14: MD Eastern Shore - BTN
11/17: Abilene Christian - MC22 & BTDN
11/22: Penn - BTN
11/28: Xavier - NBCSN
11/29: UTEP or Tennessee - NBCSN or AXS TV
11/30: Battle 4 Atlantis Game 3 - NBCSN or AXS TV
12/3: Notre Dame - ESPN2
12/7: Drake - MC22 & BTDN
12/9: Fairleigh Dickinson - BTN
12/13: Iowa State - ESPNU
12/22: Arkansas Pine Bluff - ESPN3

Some things of note. ESPN3 is carrying 3 games. First time ever Iowa has appeared on ESPN3 exclusively. This is ESPN's web streaming service.

Mediacom picked up all 3 of the games on BTDN, which is good if you have Mediacom. If not, you have to pay $10 per month for BTDN (don't understand why these aren't on BTN2GO) or look for a semi-legal web stream.

If you have DirecTV you don't have to pay for BTN2GO, just login with your DTV account and watch it.

ESPN3 sucks because if you don't have a national internet provider, you can't watch it.

I hate the Big Ten network during basketball season. No excuse why they shouldn't have overflow channels. If they can't get the personal to games, they have no business calling themselves The Big Ten Network. In this day and age it's laughable that every game isn't on TV.

the games are offered locally. mediacom earned it. local stations could also buy from mediacom if they wanted to pay. mediacom clearly has a deal with learfield behind the scenes as we are the only big ten team to have such a setup. for example, wisconsin has multiple non conference games on ESPN3 exclusive. iowa has never had one. mediacom also has fiber going into carver which eliminates the need for a satellite but typically takes those games off of espn gameplan.

the iowa television network was kwwl GM bill bolsters idea. ron steele was the original play by play guy with tony powers doing color. the first year ratings were off the charts. year 2, ron took the head news job so bob OH MY hogue took over play by play. bob healey, larry morgan, and mac were also involved in later years.

The games are not offered to local stations. I called channel 9 last year and discussed it with them. They said they were not offered the games.

You're missing the difference. BTN2GO and BTDN are two different things. BTN2GO is like ESPN3, a service provided for a small fee by your pay TV provider, but made free to the customer. Not all cable/satellite providers have an agreement to offer this.

BTDN is a service the customer must pay for. Current rate is $10 per month. Most soccer, field hockey and other olympic sports are shown there. It's ridiculous with all the money the Big Ten makes that they would force us to pay more to watch men's basketball instead of showing it free on BTN2GO.

With 2 more teams thrown into the mix starting next year, TV coverage will only get worse. BTN says overflow channels are not available for basketball because of bandwidth issues. The command center used for BTN is owned by Fox and is down in Houston. Fox has a ton of NBA and NHL games during college basketball season and I was told this is why the overflow channels are off limits. This either needs to change and there is a permanent overflow channel, or the BTN launches a BTN2 to carry the extra programming. The Pac 12 has this figured out. Every football and men's basketball game is televised on the Pac 12 Network. Even the really, really bad matchups.

Tecmo alluded to this, but after looking at Utah's basketball schedule, he ain't lying: all but 1 home game (against Grand Canyon) are televised on P12N. Even exhibition games are covered. And this is probably one of the worst basketball schools in the P12. The Official Athletic Site of the University of Utah - Men's Basketball

You would think that if they were smart about scheduling, the Big Ten could figure out a way where no schools had OOC games at the same time, and if they did, ESPN would cover one game and BTN would cover the other. That way, there would be no need for overflow channels in basketball, and every basketball game in a Big Ten arena would be shown live to a national audience on TV (BTN, ESPN's, or CBS) or onine (BTN2GO, Watch ESPN). I don't think there's any reason it can't be that way.

I tried to contact Barta, and the BIg office last year to complain. I never received an answer. I think we should all try to make our concerns known. Barta was on WHO a while back, but did not take calls. I am sure he would say he has no control over this. If anyone has any contact with Barta in the future please ask him about this issue.

Ok, I'm making the switch over to Mediacom internet from Century Link. This will then let me stream ESPN3, so I will get those games, and I can watch all the BTN (Digital only) games on MC22 (I also added the very basic cable for $10 a month) which gets me the MC22.

My only question is the MC22 channel in HD? Did anyone watch the games last year on MC22 and was it decent to watch?

The Mediacom feed has been utter crap in the past.

Thanks for the info Mister! If this is the case, I'll pony up $10 to watch the BTN digital feed of those games. While not ideal, I felt the picture quality was pretty high. I will see what I think of that first exhibition game on Sunday on MC22 and go from there.

It might be better this year. The 35th Annual Galena Halloween Parade is in HD. Not certain how the Hawk games will be however......

The Halloween Parade is excellent......

They were dreadful last season.....

I don't have Mediacom anymore, but I hope they have improved their signal for the sake of those that do. I remember a game that that was an original Mediacom production that the BTN rebroadcast last year and it was horrible. The BTDN feed was tons better and the "free" internet access posted on some websites (wiziwig, e.g.) was just as good or even better.
