NO read option please. Agree?

Some posters think we will add a read option to the offense. Really? Do we want CJ running with the ball from that offense? Don't think so.

Let our stable of backs run it. We need CJ to pass the ball. Not add more runs. It seemed to me, CJ and JC were "workhorses" AND were over used, thus " beat up" . They carried us on offense, and finally, in game seven, we discovered that Akrum and Derrick are also capable backs.

If our O-line continues its success and even improves, we might keep CJ healthy for the stretch run. That also means the O line improves pass-blocking skills to protect CJ. His ability to throw accurately and deep also is one big reason our running game is good. No read option for me. I don't want him getting plastered. You?

I think you see some coaches have the read option, the triple option, etc in the playbook and they practice it for somewhat crucial 3rd and 4th down plays. The hawks hardly run it but once every two games is OK.

I agree with you that we need CJ healthy and throwing darts while the I formation run game is clicking.

Never liked the read option. That said, a couple times a game, fine. The problem is...at the mesh point...unless you practice it a ton...bad things can happen.

Pro Style, with a twist....me likely.

What about like Ricky Stanzi handing off the same zone run play for years, then keeping it for a first down against Penn State.

Read Option isn't something we really do anyway.. I can't remember the last time I saw it.
Right now we don't want CJ running much because he isn't healthy.

However totally removing that from CJB and saying he is just a pocket passer is really not the way to go. He isn't a consistently accurate passer at this point that can just methodically pick people apart from the pocket. Part of what makes him dangerous is his ability to run (like the ISU game) and one of the reasons most of us wanted him over Rudock.

If you mean Iowa should eliminate the read option to prevent any more injury to CJ, I'm with you. Maybe we should eliminate plays for offensive tackles and running backs, too?

Many more high schools are putting in the read option. Iowa can recruit that QB from Hoover High School(Des Moines, Iowa), for example, instead of recruiting him as a receiver or running back.. Not saying for sure the Hoover QB is sure talent.

When CJ runs, he's one more running back that the defense has to account for. In a read option, the QB is another running back the defense has to account for. Like the wildcat forces the defense to account for another running back.

Put the read option in as a trick play. Don't have to let CJ run with the ball while he's injured. Get the defense to think about something else 'cause Iowa's offense has to trick its way through this season to be successful. Coaching has a lot to do with Iowa's success.

The read option is for bad QBs, you don't read coverages or have to find open receivers. You make a read based on the DE, that's it. With good blocking and team speed it can work but eventually you need your QB to find his 3rd option on a big pass play to win a game, zone read QBs can't do that.

We know CJ will scramble. No one open, he may tuck and run. Got that. But, a read option is just another opportunity to hit him - handoff or not. I would much rather have him pitch or lateral the ball to a runner.

7-0 and I don't recall running the read option at all this year but we all of a sudden implement it???

No thanks.

Let's just get healthy with T. Smith and get J. Smith more snaps and lessHillyer and stick with Wadley with a little Leshun and Mitchell mixed in and we'll be just fine.

Don't mind the read option as a wrinkle, but not this year. Beathard is hurt, probably more than they're letting on, and putting him in planned runs is not a smart thing to do.

I thought this thread was a plea for Jon to add an ignore option for the cultists. lol

Okay, now I get it. Ferentz is using the bye week to install the no huddle spread read option offense. That offseason trip to the coaches clinic in Oregon is beginning to make sense right about now. Maryland lost to West Virginia by a ton of points earlier this year, so clearly the staff thought this was the right time to install the offense. We are talking full on Oregon/Baylor style reinvention next week, jet tempo, speed options, skid marks down the sidelines where the return guy who motioned into the h-back spot takes the double reverse for a housecall kind of stuff.

I hate the read option. Just not fun to watch IMO.

That's all I got...

I agree. However stanzi ran it a few times very successfully. Against Penn State in 08 and 09 and against Illinois in 08. So rare that I remember it.

As rare as the toss sweep.

I still believe that was Ricky being Ricky...I don't think the RB or anyone expected him to take it, but that's the kind of play that he would make.

At another public Internet outlet. Response is so slow and why this post was originally garbled..

Anyway, this tongue in cheek post I quoted sure is conservative. Is this you, Kurt Derthatsfootball?

Watch the PSU 2009 replay - Stanzi had to jerk the ball back from Robinson. Robinson seemed surprised that Stanzi actually kept the ball but it was a HUGE first down for the Hawks.
