From ESPN insider:
"Worst 8-0 team ever"
So says Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press, lamenting that the Big Ten's highest-ranked team is still unbeaten because it has "incorporated the perfect strategy -- waiting out the opposition's inevitable mistakes." Sharp also goes on to say that an unbeaten Cincinnati team would deserve a BCS championship game invite more than a 12-0 Iowa club.
OK, we could chalk up Sharp's rants to sour grapes -- the Hawkeyes beat both Michigan and, in last week's stunner, Michigan State this season. But others, including ESPN.com's Bruce Feldman, have pointed out that Iowa has the smallest margin of victory among the teams in the top 10 of the BCS standings, and you have to admit that the thought of facing the Hawkeyes doesn't exactly make anyone shiver.
We look at it this way: If Iowa manages to make it through the next four weeks without losing (the Nov. 14 game at Ohio State appears to be the only possible setback), chances are the Hawkeyes will get waxed in whatever BCS bowl they end up in anyway. So why get all bent out of shape now?
