Nice summary of recent buzz/rumor (long)

I haven't seem much that contradicts this ... so I consider it to be a pretty fair appraisal of the current buzz coming out of camp and whatnot. It's taken from a poster on the scout site.

QB: Vandy looked like dog crap in the spring game. Granted McNutt was out, the weather was horrible and all the QB's didn’t look like much that day. Vandy no doubt has an arm, and can bullet the ball. From what I've seen, he can make throws that Stanzi couldn’t. Vandy has had some game experience and the fact he's a vocal gun slinger doesn’t worry me. Practice rumors are he's a stud, open practice he made a stupid pick into triple coverage. I’m betting he has some expected setbacks this year but will learn from every mistake he makes. The fact that everyone around him has said he's a nut about watching film is a very good sign. #2QB is a huge question mark. There is no doubt that Jake looks as good as a freshman QB could look. To the people that think he'll redshirt due to arm strength need to think again, cause he connected to Grant on the deep ball in the open practice and it took all doubt from me on his arm strength. Derby looks better than Weinke, but it’s just my personal opinion that Derby needs to be run out of the shotgun. Derby had a dumb pick in open practice but from the years I've been following him and hoping for a dual threat QB I can honestly say he's making progress. I think Derby gets the nod at #2 but he better continue to improve and at a faster rate, cause Jake looks very comfortable in the pro style offense. Weinke holds on the ball too long, and continues to be off mark with his throws.

RB: Coker is a lock for starter. There’s really no need to talk about him other than he's a stud and if god willing he'll go down as one of the Iowa great running backs (That’s if the AIRBHG has anything to say). At number two I was hoping DeAndre but White looks solid, and White looks like he's a complete back with his awareness of blocking and catching. McCall is said to be a beast that is a good downhill runner, at the open practice though Jordan C looked like the real deal especially with his speed. Bullock got some love from the BTN crew but if I had to guess it comes to Jordan C to not wear the red shirt. At fullback Gimm and Resien look like they have the potential to be a decent blocking back if Rodgers isn’t ready for a couple of games so no worries there. Heard that Mark Weismann looks like he will be a great mix in next year

OL: Riley Reiff, James Ferentz, and Markus Zusevics are locks. Riley and Markus will both get drafted if their year plays out half of what I expect it to. Gettis looks like a monster and I'd expect him to start if he continues as is, but he'll have some competition. Tobin and Woody Orne are some names I'd watch out for, these boys are hungry and wanting to play, they provide great competition and are excellent backups. Scherff, Van Sloten, Boffeli, and MacMillan will also be pressing full speed for playing time. A lot of capable backups, so there is very little room for error on the Oline cause someone right behind them is watering at the mouth ready for a chance to play. Blythe and Walsh have been getting praises but I'd expect a redshirt out of both of them. Donnal breaks his mold this year and we'll hear about his progress. The future looks bright with Dan Heiar coming along after the accident

TE: Herman is a lock, other than that everything I've heard from this group were great things. Derby, HKC, CJF, Duezy, Hamilton are all said to be looking good. Vier is said to be dealing with an injury but other than that, I predict we could go through 3 of these guys before we'd feel any effect.

WR: McNutt is a lock. Davis is the next big thing. This kid has made some amazing catches and can block like the best of them. Davis is money in the bank. #3 WR is the true question. Shumpert looks like a great blocking/hands wideout for number 3, KMM looks like a agile/quick slot guy, Staggs continues to impress with his catching ability and his field awareness. Each one of these guys brings something different to the table; I personally like Shumpert due to his chip on the shoulder attitude. Jordan Cotton looks like he still needs a year; I say this kid will be a colin sandeman like producer by his senior year. Grant and Hillyer look very impressive. I wasn’t expecting a 6'4 190 Hillyer to play that aggressive but he does, Grant & Rudock look to be on the same page.

DB: Hyde and Prater are locks. Hyde is just a matter of where he will play FS or CB. Sleeper and Bernstine have tough competition against each other, Bernstine was the nickel SS while Sleeper was the 4-3 SS the majority of the open practice. Its been said by multiple people that Bernstine has had his best camp ever. Miller looks like a capable FS, he showed some promise in the insight bowl. If I had to choose though, I'd keep Hyde at FS. The other corner spot goes Castillo than Lowery; I predict its Lowery’s though after Castillo messes up. Lowery looks legit and I really don’t see the competition here. Campbell plays fast but makes mistakes so look for a RS, Nico Law will be needed more next year so look for a RS but i wouldn’t be surprise if he gets some PT via SPT. Lomax, Fisher, & walk on Travis Perry has gotten some praises as well but I’m seeing a RS unless they play SPT. This will go down as one of the most talented backfields in B1G this year.

Dline: Binns and Daniels are locks. Bigach has been doing a lot of things right & is in the mix of things. Carl Davis looks like he could be a stud if he didn’t need to get yelled at every other play to keep his butt down and drive. Davis is a stud, he has the size and skills but sometimes he seems too lazy to keep his hips low and drive. Trinca-Pasat plays the way Davis should but without his weight, this kid really has a motor and if we don’t hear from him much this year, we will next year. Cooper looks like the coaches are expecting him to play. Cooper has been getting a lot of first time reps, he doesn’t look great but he doesn’t look bad for a true freshman. Cooper will progress to something way better by the end of the year. Alvis plays like Trinca-Pasat, high motor. Alvis to me seems like a great guy to give some a rest for a couple series but maybe a little undersized to do a full game. Forgy also looks like an Alvis, undersized but a great motor to bring in for a couple. Raymon looks huge, needs to work on getting those tree trunks bigger(very top heavy). Good thing about Raymon is I've been told he's staying on campus for this year to give it an honest try. Nardo looks like he’ll be getting a lot of PT this year with Bigach. Leborn Daniel isn’t a name I’ve been following but Im sure he’ll be the other side DE. McMinn looks a bit undersized, but has the speed of a pass rusher. With DE being so thin I bet Raymon or McMinn see the field this year

LBer's: LEO-Nielsen MIKE-Morris are locks. WILL- is a tossup between Hitchens and Kirksey with the slight edge going to Kirksey. The WILL is a bet undersized compared to most years but their speed will be great when we play against the spread teams. Backing up Morris will be Bruce Davis. Davis is a great run stopper and looks very capable to back up Morris, hopefully he's a monster on SPT as well. Dibona was looking great til he went down. Terrence Pryor and Tom Donatell look like the best backups for our LEO. Pryor looked like a beast at the open practice. Quinton Alston, Melvin Spears, and Marcus Collins look physically ready to play. I’d expect some SPT playing time out of two of them, Collins has really impressed me. Poggi hasn’t really showed me much, but he was highly recruited so I'd expect him to step it up this year and see the field.

Assuming that the above is accurate (and I believe that most of it is), it suggests that some guys have really stepped up and have made some strides. In particular, I'd like to single out ...

- Shumpert: Staggs had passed him in the spring. I could be wrong, but it sounds like Shumpert has put himself squarely back in the equation at WR. I don't expect a big breakout year from him this year. However, if he continues progressing ... I think that he could legitimately break out in '12.

- Trinca-Pasat: Aside from my own good impressions of the young man ... it sounds like he's really stepped up his game. This good news. It's also great to hear that he's a high-motor guy.

- Bernstine: Most of what I've heard suggests that he really has been having pretty good camp. Going off of the momentum he created from himself from bowl prep ... I think that this could be a good sign. Too bad he got slowed by the rhabo ... he possibly could have exploited the aforementioned momentum more in such a case. Anyhow, regardless of whether he's a starter, I anticipate that he'll be a pretty good contributer for the D.

I am very excited about the potential of Carl Davis and Darrian Cooper as a DT pair. Is there any chance Mike Daniel could play outside situationally? It seems like we have more depth at tackle than at end.

Overall, I think the offense is poised for an outstanding season, and answering a couple questions on defense will be the difference between good and great.

i'd like to single out his comments about keenan davis since we just had a thread discussing whether or not KMM would pass him on the depth chart. i stick to my initial reaction of "absolutely not" and this piece only solidifies my opinion.

thanks for the post homer

Confirms the conventional wisdom out there. Our defense will be small but fast. If they stay healthy, that might be ok against ISU,Pitt,NW,Neb,PU,IU,Mich, and Minny. PSU and MSU are still power running teams and may give us problems.

Stay healthy, and we have a chance.

PSU's biggest strength on O is arguably the talent level of their WRs. Their top RB is darn good ... however, their OL will still be a tid bit of a question mark. Thus, if Iowa can tackle well against the run ... and then contain those dangerous WRs ... then I wouldn't be as worried about PSU's O.

No, we wouldn't want to move Daniels to the outside. Furthermore, you need to consider how important it is to have some experience on the inside. I would be terrified if we had both Davis and Cooper as the starting guys at DT as freshman. Besides, Carl needs to get to a point where it becomes more second nature for him to get low. We're going to face some big interior O-linemen ... and he's going to quickly learn that his size will count for squat against those guys. As it is, I'm sure that he's already learning how Iowa's smaller interior O-linemen can really effectively use leverage to their advantage.

Anyhow, against getting back to Mike Daniels ... we want him on the interior. Mike understands leverage ... and because of that, he's awful tough to move on the interior line. On top of that, he's an awfully disruptive force too. We want that sort of player on the interior.

However, all the above said ... I too am excited about the POTENTIAL of Davis and Cooper. If those guys show an aptitude for disrupting plays and providing the DL with a spark ... then they'll have a shot to see frequeny action. The more that they take advantage of their opportunities ... the more situations the coaches will try to find to put them in. It will really be that simple.

Lastly, I wouldn't be so quick to forget Trinca-Pasat or Bigach. Heck, Alvis has shown some aptitude at DT too.

I've been thinking the same way about Jason White. His blocking ability may get him playing time. That's super important in our scheme. Remember Robinson was a great blocker too (think Greg Jones during the MST game). My son was sitting next to me on Kid's day. I was taking some pix of the LBs and he blurts out "Wow! Did you see the block #3 put on that big guy?". Missed it totally but it was obvious to my kid and it probably played well with the coaching staff too. Also his ability to get behind the line is impressive. He's small, hard to see, and should be reliable getting whatever the O-line gets us.

Speaking of O-line, noticed there wasn't anywhere near the holding that was going on during the Spring practice. This was a concern for me but it looks like they cleaned that up.

but at RB it's not enough to know your assignments and try hard. You have to be able to do the job. The first time White can't convert a 3rd and 1 because he lacks the speed to get to the edge or make a guy miss in the hole he'll give way to McCall as the 2nd RB. We saw this with O'Meara as the 2nd RB behind Greene in 2008 and then as the starter initially in 2009. Against Pitt in 2008, O'Meara was being used as Greene's backup, he failed to convert an easy 3rd down pass when he caught the ball and tried to outrun guys laterally instead of just heading upfield and getting the first down. Hampton took over No. 2 RB reps after that.

My guess is White sees the 2nd RB reps against Tennessee Tech, but if either McCall/Canzeri/Johnson/Bullock impress when they get in the game againt Tenn. Tech, they'll move into the No. 2 RB role. The Iowa coaches handle this the right way, they don't give anyone anything. But in our offense we can't get by with below-average at RB when there are better options, talent-wise, in the program. The coaches of course know this, my guess is they just want to let one or more of the young guys prove it on the field before committing to them.

White is a good bit better than you're suggesting. He's a bit more on par with Adam Robinson. Remind me how many fans didn't think that Robinson was good enough either? However, all the same ... up until getting knocked out of the MSU game ... who was Iowa's MVP on the O?

Don't get me wrong ... I too anticipate that White might eventually get passed on the depth chart. However, it was just last year when White had earned buzz suggesting that he had a pretty good shot of being able to earn a starting safety spot for 2011 ... legit buzz. However, Iowa ended up needing him more at RB because we lost BOTH ARob and Hampton ... and the rest is history. Anyhow, considering that he was considered to be good enough to become a starter for us on D ... I'm inclined to believe that he's likely better than the average fans realizes.
