NFL, NBA...draft idea

The decision to be drafted or remain at college is a big one. Now, it seems that a player can declare for the draft, without hiring an agent, to "test the waters" and as long as he doesn't hire an agent or take money he can remain in the draft or decide to go back to college, based on the input of the NFL teams and scouts, etc. I am not sure of the exact details about timing etc.

Why not do it this way, declare for the draft, and remain in the draft pool with the option to go back to school if desired.

A player could remain on the draft board during the drafting process but if he sees that he has fallen to, say the third round, he could then decide to take himself off the draft board and wait until the following year. It would happen in the moment and flow of the draft.

It would be fair to the player, be the most honest and accurate of all inputs, and it would also be fair to the teams. If the player is "off the board" well, they are used to that when other teams select players ahead of them that were high on their list of draft options.

The updates could be flashed across the screens of all teams and the viewing public. Charles Cook, "Off The Board - Player's Decision."

Then, back to college, win/win.

I like it. A lot. Feedback from the NBA, and talk from various teams, are cheap. Would increase the negotiating position of the players, because they could say to a team which has said they are "interested", 'Great. You've got 3 picks the first 2 rounds. If you don't pick me up by then, we probably aren't a good match and I may or may not go off the board.'

Agree, the players would have more ownership in how they value where to go and when. Talk is cheap, as you note.

I think it is more than fair to take themselves "off the board" when it works for them.

In the NBA, foreign players can declare for the draft, get drafted, and the team owns their rights for something like 3 years, and they can stay overseas and play until both the player and the team thinks they are ready. Why college players can't do the same is bizarre to me.
