Next Year's Recruits.....

We can debate all we want about Lick's abilities to recruit, but this is my small take on next year's class.

All four were under the radar players, except for maybe Brust, who I think was injured when he verballed to Iowa. I know many were skeptical to bring a kid in like that who was suffering from an injury. The other three, Larson, McCabe and Marble did seem to be under the radar with not much high level interest.

All of them blew up in summer AAU games and seem to be doing the same this year, especially Marble. I know when McCabe was undecided over the summer he was starting to get more interest from bigger schools until he verballed to Iowa.

It seems this staff did a great job of indentifying these recruits before they started to garner more interest nationally. We will see how it all pans out, but I am excited about this class and ready for them to be on campus!

Edit: Changed Payne to Brust

It's nice that Brust and Marble seem like explosive players but Lickliter knows how to drain the explosiveness out of players better than anyone...a year of learning to pass around the perimeter and take end of the shot clock prayers will stop their development...

Did he drain the explosiveness out of Kelly, or just drain his will to play basketball at the UofI???

I would take issue with your comments, clicheusername3.

I don't think our offense is being executed properly when they pass it around for 30 seconds and take a tough shot as the clock expires. So Lick isn't exactly teaching them to do that, fwiw. If we had more better players, we would see better execution. I think we got those players with this class. We also had them with Peterson and Kelly. If we had those two we wouldn't be talking about throwing the ball around and not being able to get a good shot off. I am not saying it is or isn't Lick's fault we don't have them. I am simply commenting on what it would be like if we did have them.

If a coach has players that can't execute his offense then it IS his fault. Also, if coach ISN'T teaching them to play the offense this way, who is? He's the coach! These excuses are really getting old.

By the way, if the archives were available, you would see the same comments for Lickliter's class of Tucker, Fuller, Gatens (being the one NOT under the radar), and Brommer. "Wow - he's a genius finding all these other guys that are "under the radar". Top players in Arizona and Minnesota."

Perhaps it's just time we realize the emperor has no clothes on.

I didn't say it wasn't Lick's fault that these are the players he has. I was simply trying to get a point across. Perhaps I can do it a different way. If Lick had a group of junior high players and he taught them as best he could, if they were over matched by the best group of players in college basketball, they might theoretically dribble the ball around the perimeter and not be able to get a good shot off. Then with a few seconds left on the shot clock they might take a bad shot. In this example the fault wouldn't be with Lick but with the fact that the players he was using were outclassed.

I specifically didn't give Lick a break or say it wasn't his fault. All I said was what you are seeing is not the offense the way he is teaching it. I also said that if he had Pete and Jake it would be a different story. Those are both pretty much indisputable.

As near as I can see, nothing I said can be disputed by anyone that knows anything about basketball. So back off Francis (1MoreHawkeyeInTX). If you want to try to make some look like an idiot, do it to yourself. I don't think it will be too hard. But don't try to make it sound like I said something I didn't say. It doesn't make you look very smart.

Thawki - I apologize if you took my post personally. It wasn't intended that way. In fact, I wasn't calling you out at all... sorry if you felt it was implied. I was actually addressing multiple points in a single post and wasn't clear.

Perhaps the offense would look different with different players... perhaps not. I don't know how the point is "not disputable". He's had Kelly and Peterson and has looked pretty bad with them as well. Whether they would have improved this year... I don't know - maybe. It looks to me like guys that have been playing basketball all their life look completely lost playing this incredible system that Lickliter is failing to successfully teach. Personally, I don't see players developing much under Lickliter... that's my perspective. I think that perspective is more tangential to your point rather than contentious. Regardless... if we disagree, we disagree... it has nothing to do with intellectual capacity.

1MOre has a very valid point. The players on the team ARE Lickliters players. If the scenario plays out as you described it and they aren't getting the offense or aren't capable of running the offense then it still falls back on Lick. He recruited them and he is coaching them.

I'll be honest. I'm sure his offense is difficult to grasp for the players because for the life of me I don't get it either. It may take two years to learn how to unlearn the game of basketball and then learn his form of basketball....which from what we see on the floor just isn't good.
