Newsflash to those worried about Fran running someone out...

You aren't running someone off if they have been on scholarship for four years.

In the even Ellingson isn't around after next season, saying he might have been run is not really accurate. He would have been on scholarship for four full seasons. You aren't required to keep someone around for five years just because they weren't' good enough and had to redshirt to get four years of PT.

Ellingson redshirted because he broke a bone in his foot. There are a got of possibilities with Ellingson staying for five years. I'm looking forward to seeing him play this year. Ellingson is a gifted shooter with a ton of experience. There are a lot of guys I'm looking forward to seeing play this year.

according to dean, it's also possible that CJ Fredrick pays his first year and comes to Iowa as (essentially) a walk on.

True.

Not sure, but I think scholarships are one year deals. But if coaches get multiple guaranteed years on a contract, student-athletes should, too.
The flip side is that players can transfer whenever they want.

There's no great scenario but it should be fair for the student-athlete.

Athletic scholarships are one year deals. They are then renewed every year. It is normally assumed all four years will be given. Not required, but assumed.

I thought scholarships were one year deals but wasn't sure so ...

The Big Ten members guarantee student-athletes four-year scholarships:

Well not according to me, but rather form a couple sources. Rob has now also said that CJ said he was ok with paying his way his first year as well. This is coming directly from the kid himself.

Since we have this information I think it is safe to say that Fran doesn't have to push any player out.

Coaching "contracts" are meaningless if someone wants to jump to a better venue...

Roster management is not running kids off, it's the name of the game in today's college basketball. I have 0 doubt that the coaching staff shoots these kids straight and then let's the chips fall where they might. Iowa has problems, the good kind of problems. I remember not long ago when kids left Iowa every year because of how bad it sucked being here, now we don't have room ...

Exactly... If I had to choose between what kind of culture and tough roster decisions need answering this is it...
This kid sounds like an Ellingson 2.0 kind of player. He's not going to go to the hole and dunk on anyone or take many guys off the dribble. He seems like an outside shooter at the next level with limited athleticism... Nothing wrong with that at all it's a roll we seem to love having and get plenty out of. How he comes on be it walking on at first or if he replaces Ellingson or someone else it is what it is..

Does the BIG's policy put them at a slight disadvantage?

The BIG seems to have similar policies in football (limited number of signees per class) that seem to put the BIG at a disadvantage
(in the $EC, for example, your scholarship is literally 'up for grabs' every year if a better recruit comes along, or maybe you don't produce like they hoped. They may push you 'walk on', 'transfer' to DII or the like. Which allows them to have 35-man recruiting classes regulary)

I'm almost positive all conferences guarantee four year scholarships for student athletes now. We were just the first conference to do it.

So are guaranteed 4-year scholarships. Student can transfer any time he/she wants to transfer to a better venue.

I'm okay with it.

7 years - Fran has not had a regular rotation guy transfer out of the program. I aint worried about Fran's roster management.
