News, Notes from Press Conference

Kirk said Slater left the program back around the bowl game. I hadn't heard that before. Was this new info that he's no longer on the team? Or did I just miss an earlier announcement?

It was rumored/speculated but today was the first time KF confirmed it.

I wish Woods well in his new assignment, but have never realy understood the lack of priority given to special teams by the coaching staff. It always seems like an afterthought. Especially given all the problems before Chris White showed up and White fixed the problem with fake punts and onside kicks and kick coverage in general.

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect Woods to automaticly fail in his new position, I just hope special teams are given the proper priority on the team and Woods gets the support that special teams need.

I was really intrigued by Easley when he decided to walk on. JUCO AA. Might not be the biggest or fastest of the bunch, but he is a proven ball catcher. That is something the team lacked after MVB went down last year.

Iowa, at least in the past, has actually put a high priority on special teams. It's been Kirk's way to do that for years though, there have admittedly been a couple years where the STs have underperformed.

Like 3 straight years from 2010 to 2012 when the special teams sucked and blew about 2 games a year.

Yes, special teams sucked then even into 13-14. But special teams helped make the hawks through 2005. Need to get back to that and I think the coaches put an emphasis on it in 15-16.

Correction. Special teams helped make the hawks up to about 3 games left in 2005.

Like many other aspects of the great Iowa teams, Norm was in charge of the ST. When he was forced to step away (and later passed) the ST play was one of the worst I've ever seen.

That's another area of focus now with the change in staff. The way Iowa plays, they have to be perfect in every aspect. No room for a slip up like missing fakes, or forward passing a ball on a kickoff
