New walk-on

I am hearing that Brendon Boerm from North Tama will be joining the team as a walk-on. He's a 6' 170 pound safety.

As a QB, he had 1483 yards rushing (8.2 ypc 20 TD), 2350 yards passing (30 TD) 4 catches-213 (3 TD), 79 tackles (4 TFL) 5 INT-149 yds (1TD) 11 Punt Ret. 285 yds (25.9 ave 1 TD) 4 Kickoff Ret-197 (49.3 ave 1 TD).

In the Class A state championship game, he had 396 yards of total offense and was the leading rusher (107 yards 2 TD), passer (177 yards 2 TD) and receiver (112 yards 2 TD). Not that a person can single-handedly win a game, but this was as close to a one man show as it comes. I was at the game and have been kind of following his recruiting and have heard from a media source (radio, can't find a link, don't know the station, sorry) that he's coming to Iowa to walk on as a safety. Don't know if he'll play, but he's a great kid from a great family and will be a great addition to the team.

He also ran a 11.1 100 and a 23.3 200 in track.

He is averaging 14 ppg in basketball.

He is a 2 time all state baseball player (so far).

That's my kind of walk on!

I suspect that if he came from a larger school, he might have had more interest. Also, he is a bit undersized so a walk-on position is a good option for him.

Nothing wrong with walking-on at a program...many great players have gone this route.

The other thing is that often kids from small schools don't have time to devote all their time to 1-2 sports, so they just work on being great athletes and only play sports in season, as opposed to practicing year round. It'll be interesting to see what happens, but I imagine he could make huge gains in his first year just finally playing and preparing for football year round.
