New normal?

I don't ask this to be funny, but is the Iowa basketball program just at a place where if we happen to have a group of seniors who stick together and improve at the same time, where we are looking at making the NCAA tournament once every 10 years? Is that realistically the best we should hope for at this point?

The basketball landscape is so different than the 1980s, and the program has been in decline for so long now that the Iowa program has been dumped into the dustbin.

No recruiting base to speak of. The occasional difference-making players from the state flee (Barnes, Paige, Hinrich, Collison, Lafrentz, etc). A fan base that has been bored into tuning out. A league with 9 teams that have better recruiting base/facilities than does Iowa.

We have two decent recruits coming in next year, but they likely won't contribute much due in part to being a true freshman as well as the fact that they're more role players. Fran really really needs to get someone who can consistently create their own shot and draw multiple defenders to kick out to the likes of Gatens, Oglesby, etc. Fran also must recruit at least one big 10 talent big man.

Fran needs to find a kid that wants to be a program changer. A kid that wants the responsibility to bring a program back from the depths. I think these kids still exist. Obviously Marcus Paige isn't one of them. Or, he needs to find a 3 star kids that turns into a 5 star kid.

They don't exist...unless they go to City high or West...and I don't see any 4 or 5 stars coming down the pipe right now.

I agree, they dont exist

Kids like Marcus Paige dont want to turn a program around, they want to win national titles and get ready for the pros. The notion that Iowa kids should stay home and build something special is a movie ******, not reality

Facts are facts. Since the Big Ten Network took over Iowa games aren't viewed as often as the good days. Most kids in Iowa (myself included) used to live for Iowa basketball. Throw in now the fact that we have been flat out awful for pretty much 12 years (minus a few) and it's gonna be tough to get anyone to come here. It's just not the same.

I don't know how to change it. This really sucks. It's embarassing quite honestly..

I think we need to find recruit A-10 type talent from Philly and NYC. They don't know or really care about Iowa's struggles. Our staff has connections out there. We can offer them the chance to play right away in a power conference. We are not going to win many recruiting battles with Top 150 midwest recruits. You need to talent to win, and unlike football its harder to develop basketball talent.

This is the way to go, IMO. That road might get us to where we're good enough to "steal" a top in-state recruit to really get things going again.

Exactly. We need to get enough talent that we can win 6-9 games in the big 10 for a few years, make the NIT, and get people back in Carver. If that happens we will have a shot at higher rated instate and midwest kids.

I think people need to be patient and see what Fran can do. This team has a good nucleus that will get better if it sticks together. Everyone knew what this year was going to be like, and that their would be nights like tonight.

I'm not convinced we have a good nucleus, maybe an okay nucleus. Next year we have Basabe, Payne, Marble, and McCabe in the sophomore class. They are all flawed players, even with some natural development. The power teams will recruit over them, negating their experience to some extent. And many of them are lacking in pure athleticism. Their margin for error will be so small, even going forward. Watching ESPN and seeing the athleticism of other teams is startling.

I don't mean this to disrespect these kids. I think they are all Big 10 players, I think they will all be contributors. I'm just not sure a collection of this type of talent will win much.

Basabe is legit; he proved that much when he took Sullingers lunch money last week. Marble is raw, but has shown flashes. Cartwright is around for another year, Payne for another three (assuming he gets his redshirt), and May will be here for another two.

It's going to take time, people. The last two games don't feel good to anyone, but they really don't change anything either.

Again you are 100% correct sir.
This the starting five I like for next season, if Iowa can get two more recruits to fill in the depth issues that exist.
Payne-natural PG
Cartwright-let him create from the wing and penetrate
Gatens- best player on roster
McCabe- will settle down in sophomore year
Basabe- will be much stronger in year two

May, Marble, Oglesby, White main contributors from the bench. Hopefully either Katenda or Olesani and Stokes come off the bench as well.

Iowa will be much improved in year two and with player development will benefit. When was the last signed class that stuck together? The next one will be the 2010 class, think about how that has hurt. May needs to just play he looks completely lost at this point and why I would have him off the bench.

That team would get absolutely torched on the defensive end. At the end of the day, that's more of a problem for the team right now than the offense.

It doesn't have to be an Iowa kid, that's the thing. Maybe it's actually better if it's not. IDK. I just keep thinking back to a kid like Michael Beasley going to K State and all of the sudden they're relevant and competitive. Even after he was a one and done.
