Need Some Perspective Here - New Jordan Sneakers

Although this isn't necessarily about Iowa basketball, I have a basketball-type question? Why are people across the country acting like a bunch of lawless thugs - fighting, destroying property (especially at malls) and even committing at least one murder over buying shoes?

It is bad enough that WAY too many of the people forking over the $170+ that these sneakers cost (!!) have no money or business buying anything that costs that much, especially since it is still a pair of shoes.

I live in the Atlanta area, and it is as bad here as anywhere in the country. When it gets cold, I often take my morning walk in the mall. But a few days before these came out, mall security went to the trouble of telling my wife and I to please stay away from the mall for our own safety on that day.

I've heard of the jet-set wanting to buy nothing but the best, even if the price is beyond outrageous. But after hearing of all the fights at Wal-Marts on Thanksgiving Thursday night, and now this, I must be missing something.

Any thoughts?

Spending that much money on shoes is a bit much. But then again my parents give me crap for spending $25 on a pair of UA boxers for my 9 year old.

When we were younger we tried to outdo each other by the clothes we wore and now we are trying to do it through our kids.

All for this? When I saw the picture of them, this made even less sense. I don't get it.

I am wondering the same thing. New basketball shoes come out daily, and there are hundreds of styles so what exactly makes these so special?

You answered your own question in the second sentence.

If you can't recognize that the Jordan XI's are the best basketball shoes ever made, you should just get the **** out of here.

It just reminds me of the marketing appeal of MJ. The guy has been out of the NBA for 10+ years, and his name/brand still generates this much interest. Amazing.

Mark my words...thirty years from now, there will be orthopedic Jordans flying off the shelves...complete with walkers ;>)

Awesome! :)

I used to wear Jordan's for ball exclusively while he was still playing, now that he doesn't actually have to wear the shoes they have just gotten ridiculous and have lost their function. I've switched to Lebron's for my playing shoes as they have a more classic (as in 1990's) appeal.

If Iowa was wearing them, we would have gotten out of Wal-Mart, I mean Ames, with a W. Would have beaten Nova by 15.

Wait, how do you know that the people buying them don't have the money to do so? Seems to be a little bit of an assumption based on the purchasing demographic at best. I wonder if they look at you on your mall walk and wonder why you're not at home watching Andy Griffith reruns....

Man, I hope I'm not at the mall that day....:)

that is crazy money for sneakers, but be thankful your kids don't play hockey. You can't touch decent skates for less than $200 and the good ones are easily over $500
