My thoughts from last night

Not an expert, but love Hawkeye hoops and was pretty pumped to see this team. My main thoughts are this was a exhibition and we shouldn't over react one way or the other on anyone. They were sloppy, but this is the earliest I can remember an Iowa team ever playing in front of a crowd. In the past, they have typically played a scrimmage that wasn't open to the public. I am sure Fran would have preferred that at least for the first game. My thoughts

Gesell - is the spark plug he's always been for the Hawkeye offense, but he looks more explosive this season. He was pretty sloppy in a lot of spots as well. Seemed like he was a turn over waiting to happen in the first half. He looked more focused as the game went on.

Jok - Never met a 3 pointer he didn't like. He also showed some flashes to the basket. I think this is a big step year for Peter.

Uthoff- His stats don't show it, but he was by far the best player on the floor. He got himself into some trouble in the post and looked like he was rushing his shot at times. Also, a little sloppy with the ball. Consider me not worried one bit. He's gonna be great.

Clemmons - I thought he looked great and is going to get a lot of minutes this year because of poise, and not always searching for his shot. Kind of lets the game come to him. He looks like he can drive and penetrate a little better this season.

Woody - He is what is, all these posts acting like somehow Woody would have found explosiveness in the off season is hilarious. He looked bad at times in the 2nd half - but again, this is a game to knock off the dust. I saw some positives, there was one fast break that ended with a lay up and I thought to myself, there aren't many 7 footers in the country that can run the floor like that. If you don't expect too much from AW, you won't be let down.

Jones- Looked more active down low than I expect from all the reports of his outside game. Didn't really do much and didn't see a ton of playing time. But he looks the roll of a BT player.

Flemming - He does remind me of Gatens, but maybe a little bigger and polished than Matt was his freshman year.

Ellingson - NOT AFRAID TO SHOOT. He launched a bunch, and these are the type of games you need to do just that. Show what you have. I thought he handled the ball well, he WILL be a Ogs type of player but with hopefully better #'s. I don't see what is wrong with that? Not everyone can score.

Uhl- Didn't play much - when he did, he looked really good IMO. Maybe he was under the weather - maybe he was behind for whatever reason. I don't expect him to sit that much when the real games start. I think Fran wanted to see other combo's

Williams - Man, really liked what I saw out of him, and how he handled the rock. He's got a long ways to go but I liked it.

Wagner- Moss- Hutton- didn't play enough for me to comment.

Baer- Let's go a head and pencil him in for significant playing time at least til some of the younger guys get acclimated for D1 basketball. What a luxury IMO. I know everyone wants to believe that these Freshman are just going to walk in and rule the roost, but it's rarely the case and hasn't really been the case since Fran has had things established in IC. Guys who have been in the system, done the work and proven themselves are going to get the first look. Baer appears to be that guy this season at least early while the rest play catch up

All in all, it was an exhibition. If I am concerned about anything in this game is that the defense wasn't really there, which is kind of expected on October 29th. SF's was just chucking prayer 3's for most of the game, and some really really ugly ones were going in.

Pretty poorly called game as well, the broadcast was horrible - it's pre-season basketball after all.

Not a huge fan of small-ball. Feel much better when the Hawks have a big, strong front court (like the last couple) that can intimidate and clean up.

Agree with your assessment (and expectation) of Woody, which is why I was most excited to see what Jones could do. Didn't get a chance to watch and only going off the box but, considering the 5 boards, 1-A, 1-S, surprised he only played 9. Was 0-1 shooting and 0-2 freebies, however, don't think that was it as Ellingson was 0-fer-everything but got 13 minutes.

Ok, deep breath of perspective ... it's just an exhibition. Still, hope this isn't a flashback to couple seasons ago, where underperforming Oges and McCabe continued to be rewarded with more minutes than clearly more productive Gabe and Jok, simply because they had tenure and were the best practice shooters Fran had ever coached.

Gabe as a Junior and Jok as a freshman were NOT clearly more productive IMO. I might give you Gabe being deserving of more minutes that season, but Jok was lost. People tend to forget what guys looked like early in their careers compared to where they are now or when they left.

FWIW - I was one of the bigger anti McCabe guys out there towards the end of that year, but he played very well early on in the season and provided a more veteran and seasoned player for FM at that point in his rebuild. If he wasn't always hawking for shots, he would have been just fine and serviceable but he thought the offense ran through him. Gabe was good, but made a huge leap as far as ball handling and playing in control his junior to senior year and became much less of a defensive liability. I just don't believe Jok deserved any more minutes than he got as a freshman.

I did not watch the game, but the Baer line definitely stood out to me. 12 minutes from a walk off is pretty interesting and says Fran must like him. Our bench is the biggest concern right now, we have a pretty solid first 5-6. Hitting a good % from 3 pt land is going to be a must this year!

He kind of did it all, had a few fast breaks after steals, did some driving to the hoop and also shot very well from 3 and outside of it. Had a dunk as well as did Clemmons.

Solid core. Need a few new guys to come along and step up, which everyone knew going in. I think Baer will be one of those guys.

Went to the game last night. There were good and bad moments, but that's to be expected at this point. I don't think I saw much outside of 1 or 2 things that I wouldn't have expected going in.

Some things to note

Fleming- Looked the most comfortable of the newcomers on the floor offensively. He looks for his shot consistently but probably won't be able to beat and finish over B1G defenders off the dribble. He was all over the place defensively which resulted in some steals, but also led to some wide open shots.

Wagner- Clearly the most physically ready of all the freshman. There were a couple of times where he just ripped a rebound away from somebody. He was only OK on defense and rebounding but that's fine for now.

Williams- Still has some learning to do running the offense. Made one play near the end where he attacked the basket and finished over his defender with ease. His frame and skill set will be a nightmare when he catches up mentally.

Jones- As has been stated by Fran, there is a lot of work to do defensively. Dale needs to impose himself more on offense or he will be a net negative on the floor until he can hold his own on defense.

The other freshman didn't play enough for me to get a read on them... I will add that Hutton is probably the main candidate for a redshirt.

Uhl- Probably one of the more impressive players on the court for me. He showed some nifty footwork multiple times in the post which actually caught me off guard. He seems to have lost a bit of a step due to his weight gain but still should be able to beat most 4's and 5's he goes up against. I thought Clemmons had an outstanding game but still personally feel that starting Uhl gives Iowa the best chance to win against top competition.

Baer- Definitely can see why Fran speaks highly of the kid. He's a smart player with a good stroke. He's not a great athlete, probably will never be a starter, but he will find ways to contribute for sure.

Ellingson- He took shots even after missing a couple of threes and free throws which is all you can ask of a shooter. The kid has a great stroke... he'll be fine.

Good to hear, I was hoping it wasn't all getting to the hoop against inferior competition that won't translate to B10 play. If Gesell's poor shooting is related to his elbow injury, and he is now able to hit that mid range pull up consistently and shoot 35% or so from 3, it really raises his ceiling. During his freshman year, I thought he would be a 15 ppg scorer as an upperclassmen, but his shooting did not improve as I expected, it went the opposite direction. Hopefully he has a huge senior year.

The conspiracy theorist in me really wonders what is going on with Hutton & Moss. Fran knows what he has in the seniors and I thought the exhibitions would have been a great opportunity for these guys to get there feet wet. Maybe they will get more time in the next exhibition.

Here's Fran's comments on Hutton and Moss.....

Q. How is Isaiah Moss?
FRAN McCAFFERY: He’s behind. He’s behind, and he’s trying to catch up. I love him. He’s a great kid, but he is a little bit behind. And it affects you in two ways. It affects your ability to know and understand everything you’re supposed to be doing, but then ultimately it affects your confidence level because you know that you want to be where you’re supposed to be and you’re not always there, then you’re a step slow or you stop short. I was glad to see him raise up and shoot those two threes. They were open. He took him. Got a tip-in. He was active. Made a defensive mistake when I first put him in. Had a time-out, I showed it to him. Went back on the floor; he corrected it. So that tells me a lot about him.

Q. Hutton got in late?
FRAN McCAFFERY: Hutton was in late. He’s a little bit behind, and the hard thing for him is he’s also trying to learn multiple positions, and I think right now what we need to do with him is, okay, just let him go one at a time, and we’ll go from there.

Ellingson's line said that he was 0-2 from the field and 0-3 from the stripe. Am I missing something or why is everyone saying he was firing up a ton of shots?

Hutton and Moss are redshirting.

This wouldn't bother me one bit. I think this is the postion (wing) that we have the least need this year. Right now at the 2/3 we can go with Clemmons, Jok, Ellingson, Fleming, and Uthoff.

I think those two are going to be the best of the recruiting class when it is all said and done. RS a year is gonna help them immensely when we are leaning on them in their So-Sr. years.

After one meaningless exhibition game, I think i can safely make several assumptions :)rolleyes: JK of course) but here I go none the less:

PG: Gesell, Clemmons, and Williams
SG: Clemmons, Ellingson, and Fleming
SF: Jok, Uthoff
PF: Uthoff, Uhl/Wagner/Jones
C: Woody, Uhl/Wagner/Jones

Williams will mostly likely fall out of the rotation by B1G play. I think we need him to play early though, as he is going to be playing PG next year, so he needs some seasoning, and these early season game will get good for that.

Ellingson and Fleming will battle for the backup SG spot and the one who rises up will get the B1G playing time at this spot

Uhl/Wagner/Jones will battle for the backup PF/C minutes. Two will earn time, while one drops out of the rotation.

Fran said that Baer could play all five positions. It sounds like two of the freshmen might redshirt. Baer looks like he could be a contributor. Baer must catch on to the different requirements the positions require. He sounds like a pretty smart guy. Maybe he will be a future coach.

Oh. So we will have nobody on this years team who can get to the basket off the bounce. If that is true I'd also say there is more to that story.

Being able to defend at a high level and knowing where your suppose to be on the floor is probably more important than getting to the basket off the bounce. Both Hutton and Moss play at positions that are harder to learn. It is pretty obvious they have tons of ability. It remains to be seen who will redshirt.
