I will start with the end first where it just had that same old vibe of the offense that had played so well for 3 qtrs just couldnt muster a drive when they got the ball twice in the 4th qtr with the lead. The offense could have made a statement and put a fork in wisky.
But as far as the offense goes Stanley played very well until missing a wide open hockensen in the 4th and then once they got behind the hawk passing game looks stuck in mud trying to make a comeback. Stanley was mostly very precise and on target, hit the deep passes very well, had good fakes in the backfield, didnt audible too much because a couple times when he did it didnt work out. But he has to also take some blame for the offense not getting it done in the 4th qtr.
I think BF had some strange play calls in the 4th qtr also when Toren Young and IKM were getting good yards running to go to some passes.
The offensive line was doing pretty well, even very well at times between the tackles/inside zone. The one good jet sweep was good but overall you cant run wide against that defense very well. The receivers did their job for the most part and made the catches. We have to keep getting mismatches with our TEs and using them. Brandon Smith IIRC is starting to make some plays, Easley is a good receiver. Maybe need to try some younger wideouts also.
The running backs played very well, no fumbles in a hard hitting game, they made guys miss, ran with power, and were productive.
The offense had over 400 yards against one of the better defenses so that bodes well for the rest of the season.
On defense they had their problems stopping the first down run which hurt and made the play action work so well. But at the same time the defense, except for the 2nd score by wisky on a 10 yard short field, basically only gave up 7 points in 59 minutes. It should have been enough to win.
The Dline wasnt getting as much penetration but that was a very good offensive line that was also in a 7 blocker jumbo formation many times. I thought the linebackers were getting caught in the wash of the line play too much but I am not sure if they are instructed to try to penetrate into holes or try to scrape along the line.
Anyway, I thought our corner play was below average, we had too many linebackers on slot or fast receivers the way wisky schemed and did formations. I guess I would rather see the two corners and the safeties on the receivers and take your chances run/pass blitzing on Lbkr to try to create pressure.
I dont see the hawk defense playing against a better running attack (they shut down Montgomery) and going against a beter pass blocking Oline so going forward things could be good.
Special teams had issues as you know but the first two turnovers were flukey, the first one the hawk punt returners hand and the ball banged into a wisky players butt which caused the fumble. Total fluke and the wisky player was getting blocked and not even looking at Grunemeir or whatever his name is.
So hang onto the ball and the hawks will win some big games.
