My list

1.) Jamie Dixon or Bruce Pearl: Either one is obviously a big time hire. Barta needs to make a huge offer and aggressively try to get Dixon or Pearl to make the move. Be persistent. Show him how much we'd love him to come here. Ask him what he needs and make it happen. Aim high and get it done!

2.) Scott Drew: As I think about the job he did at Baylor, that is just what we need done at Iowa. I think he could bring a serious injection of talent into the program. Drew has Midwest roots and I think we could get him.

3.) Steve Lavin: Combine Lavin's coaching experience with the unique perspective he has gained from traveling all over America as a college basketball broadcaster, and I feel confident he has an excellent understanding of what it will take to be successful. Vitale endorsed this on ESPN, and I think Barta should listen. Vitale's statement is an example of the national level positive attention a hire like this would bring to the program. Downside here is would Lavin be a true member of the community, embrace living in Iowa... not sure.

4.) B.J./Steve Forbes: Team these two would-be rookie D1 head coaches up. Be creative, break the mold. B.J. is the head man and the face of the program, Forbes is associate head coach. Pay B.J. 1 million and Forbes $800,000, something like that.

5.) Bob Knight: At least it would be incredibly fun and interesting. There would not be a dull moment. It would be fun, and I miss Iowa basketball being fun.

Would also be happy with: Kevin Stallings, Seth Greenberg. Buzz Williams

I think that Drew or Dixon are the two coaches who I would like more than Forbes.

Once you get into a mid major mold, I would just as soon take a major division assistant that views this job as the pinnacle of his career.

Drew and Dixon are in my opinion such strong candidates that the fact that they might leave in 5 years or so is an ok risk.

But with those two, I would put in a hefty buyout if they were to leave. 5 years is the minimum that we would need from one of those two.

I would also add that I think Drew is going to get a major look... we have the money to really make it a major lifestyle changer.

Plus -

It get's him back into the midwest
He is now the biggest basketball coach in the state as opposed to the 7th. (Mavs, Spurs, Rockets, Longhorns, TAMU, TTU)

There is ZERO reason for him not to be interested in the Iowa job.

Drew is getting a lot of talk from what I am hearing.

Elaborate? I'm sure he gets alot of press in the media (ESPN, etc.) as the next coach at another big school, but anything about Iowa talking with Drew? Drew is #1 on my list, except for maybe Jamie Dixon.

I like your list except for "The General" and Stallings.

Nothing concrete but it seems he's #1 right now according to the other board. His name has been brought up a lot.

I would be shocked if Dixon would ever consider this job. He is coaching in a basketball city school, has had a ton of success and leads a Top 10 national program, in a prestigious conference. Why in the world would we give that all up, to try and rebuild a traditionally (at least in last 20 years) mediocre school, with average facilities and fan support in a recruiting challenged geography where he has no connections?

It amazes me that people think Marquette, Pitt, Baylor, TX A & M, Memphis ect.. are inferior jobs and their coaches would be interested in coaching here. These schools, with the exception of Baylor, have all been better than ours recently. It is tough to win, if a coach has something going he is not going to leave and risk not turning around this program and getting fired. It is much easier to continue to win, than it is to start winning. Unless we offer drastically above-market salary to these coaches I would be shocked if they considered our job.

Last 10 years we've been mediocre, but not the last twenty.

Average faciliites? With the brand new practice facility coming, I would hope our facilities will soon be better than just average.

Totally disagree on the fan support. We were Top-20 or better in attendance every single year until late in the Alford era when it started to dwindle a bit, and the Lickliter era totally killed it off. The fans will be back if the next coach gives the fanbase a reason to get excited. Our fanbase has proven its support in the past when the hoops team has had success.

Still, I do at least agree that most name coaches are a longshot at best, but why not at least try?

Pittsburgh's a basketball city school? i don't know what that means, but he's behind the Steelers, Penguins and Pitt Football.

Drew would be awesome. I do think we would have a shot at him, as we could definitely sweeten the deal money wise.

I really like your list. I think the only difference between Pearl and Dixon would be who Iowa fans connect with initially. Over the long haul, I believe Dixon might be the better hire. Just a hunch though on my part.

I'm a Pearl guy, but Dixon or Drew would be big time hires and I would have no complaints...and it's all about me.

Basketball on the east coast is a city sport. There a ton a good players playing in those cities, prep schools, ect... It is easy to recruit to place like Pittsburgh where city kids are afforded a city atmosphere, that is geographically close. City schools have an advantage in basketball as well, as you only need 14,000 fans to care about your program and attend your games. So while they may be behind those other sports in terms of gross support, they have more than enough support from their alumni/fans in the city.
