So, the hawks are said to have a good offensive line. Iowa is a downhill running team. Depth is the word at runningback this year. One offensive lineman is a shoe in for the NFL Draft. So here the hawks are COMING IN AT 5TH in the conference. but hey Iowa has a great reputation for pounding the rock

If that holds, it'll be one of the better rushing stats we've had under KF. Typically we're near the bottom, minus 2002 and 2008.

The holes, cutback lanes, etc..........are there, a bona fide Big 10 tailback would have a heyday running behind this group. It also makes life tougher when nobody respects your passing game. Its incredible the offensive line is generating what they are considering everything that is up against them.

This is from ESPN, and it goes to show that one can use statistics anyway they want. Hawks are 193 / game which is over 100 off OSU's mark but still good for 28th in the country. Since the numbers below match the numbers above I'm guessing that Yahoo was giving me 2013 numbers source

That's true. I think we were also pretty good in 2001. If we have success running the ball, we have success on offense. We finished 1st, 1st and 3rd in scoring 2001, 2002 and 2008 and those were the best years by far under KF. The rest KF's teams have finished in the bottom half of the Big Ten in scoring (except 5th in 2003)

Actually, I think those stats are for 2013. So I think you're mistaken that you're mistaken.

I think the problem is that Iowa is a good rushing team with a very good OL, but when your wide receivers can't seperate and get open and you have no consistent deep threat, teams can stack the box.

That is what is happening against the good defenses

Agreed..and most really good defenses can take away good rushing offenses.

Balanced offense? KirFer always tries to keep a well balanced offense. I don't have the stats in front if me, but typically in the past it's been a good 50/50 split. This would affect the rushing rankings, no?

We've been at our best when we are above 60/40, which was true in 2001, 2002 and 2008 (and those were the only years). When we get close to 50/50 we've been pretty bad (like in 2012). Even in 2004 we were 7th in scoring.

This year we are right around 59% which I think is good. That's probably why we haven't had any bad losses. Still though we are towards the bottom in scoring and I think part of the problem is the plays don't compliment each other enough. That's the problem with the KF and GD hybrid. Our passing game doesn't set-up our running game and vice versa, because we throw out of the shotgun way too much. I think we should throw more out of running formations and go shotgun much less often.

btw, I thought the playcalling in the Purdue game was pretty good other than going shotgun on 3rd & 3 and 4th & 3 in the 1st half. I think we only went shotgun a few times that game.

That is what is happening against the good defenses

Since the field is shrunken by Iowa's running game, short yardage receivers, and average armed QB, any average defense becomes great against Iowa. FIFY.

I would contend, during the KF era, that the offensive numbers are ALWAYS 'skewed' down because of these factors...
1)KF's offense's generally bleed almost every second off play clock. In this day and age when almost everyone runs 'spread' and hurry-up offense, the Hawks tend to plod-along and milk clock. Although we are showing signs of occasional 'tempo' which is nice
2)KF's cover 8 bend-but-don't-break defenses tend to KEEP the opposing teams offense on the field more so than other teams. (although again showing signs of more aggression this year)

These factors keep the Hawk's OFFENSIVE PLAYS PER GAME down, year-in, year-out. Therefore our offense always 'looks' worse on paper, by-the-numbers.
