My Interview with Oliver Martin from Tonight

Thanks, Rob! You were classy to lay off the question that I selfishly wish you would have asked. Well-done.

Come on, Oliver! Iowa!

Thanks. He's a good kid trying to make the hardest decision of his life that will affect the rest of his life. As an Iowa fan, I want him here. But it's his decision and it's best to let him go through the process and make sure it's the right choice.

I didn't see anyone, anywhere clamor ing for Iowa to offer a 2* WR from Iowa City two months ago. Now that he is blowing up the camp circuit, everyone is acting like all these schools should have known before he camped with them that he was gonna blow up the camp......

Actually, there was a thread on here wondering why Iowa hasn't offered yet. Also it's not the general publics job to scout kids. It's a legit question to wonder why Iowa didn't offer earlier. He clearly has 4 star talent and he clearly had 4 star talent 2 months ago.

Oregon, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Michigan State not knowing about him is no big deal because of logistics. But Iowa did know about him and they were clearly under valuing him. In fact, more time passed between Iowa watching him camp and pulling the trigger on an offer than most, if not all, other power 5 schools. The other schools pretty much immediately offered.

Iowa did know about him, they were the only P5 school that did know, and the only P5 school that was even recruiting him at all. He improved a lot from last year to this year. It happens, kids mature at different rates. Oliver Martin a year ago wasn't putting up these eye popping number and wasn't a D1 football recruit. Fast forward a year and he has matured into a D1 football player.

That's the thing. Iowa did know about him Dean. That's why it's frustrating. I usually agree with you on here, but I really don't see your point here. They didn't jump in until everyone else did and that's unfortunate because they knew about him. It's as simple as that. He said himself that an earlier offer from Iowa would have made a difference. A difference with this kid would have been a big deal. Seems like it's wide open now. It almost seems like he's talked himself out of Iowa. I don't know why I say that. He just doesn't seem excited at all when talking about them.

I completely agree with this but it doesn't explain the hesitation after seeing him in camp. Besides, shouldn't camps be for tweeners that maybe deserve a scholarship and maybe don't? Martin was far from a tweeners 2 months ago. Like I said, he was 4 star talent 2 months ago. Iowa shouldn't need to see him in camp to recognize that.

Iowa's offer would have needed to be well in advance of the other schools, I really don't believe that it would have made a huge difference had Iowa offered a week before versus a week after Wisconsin/Minnesota. I don't see this the same as Stanley, as Iowa was on him very early and had a commitment before Wisconsin even offered.

It seems to me that people are picking a side based on their emotions about the coaching staff. Similar to a post in another thread; how would people feel if he had committed to Iowa before going to the first opening? He'd be a 2 star nobody. No one was talking about him until he did well in the Chicago opening. After that, he became a staple on the forums, had he committed to Iowa he may have closed down his recruitment and we'd be complaining that we have a slow white kid at receiver.

Iowa beat out EVERYONE for two recruits this year. I'd give them some slack and see how things go, I trust Ferentz.

They didn't hesitate after camping, they offered. They had him in for a Jr. day, Martin didn't "camp" at the Jr. day, they do that at the camp, which was in June, and at which they offered him.

Yes they do need a kid to camp from year to year, so they can see if he is progressing. Last year he didn't put up the numbers that he did this year. It is a simply concept, the kid improved markedly over what he did last year. Heck he said his goal was to improve his 40 time, his shuttle time, basically improve enough from last year to earn offers this year.

They did with Martin what they do with a TON of Iowa kids. They establish a relationship (no other P5 school was even in contact with him), and they monitor him closely. Last year it was Beyer, that they watched and made a move on after his Sr. year. The year before that Anthony Nelson and Nick Wilson, the year before that Parker Hesse, the year before that Josey Jewell, and on and on and on the list goes.

This seems like a classic "hindsight is 20/20" thing. Could they have offered him sooner? Sure, a couple of weeks maybe at most based on how he arrived on the scene as a good receiver recruit.

The staff's done a great job overall for the 2017 class so if we fail to land Martin it would have to be regarded as a hiccup but not much more.

Rob posted the time line in another thread. It was one or two weeks later he got the offer. If they would have offered right away, they would have been the first offer. I do agree with whoever just said that a couple weeks doesn't make a difference. It would have to be way early to matter.

It's not about opinion on the staff. DP is a huge supporter and he was the first to say they dropped the ball.

"Excited" is a relative term.......i would say he is just going through the process and exploring his options.

Performing well in camps is much different than actual games. They were probably wanting to see him perform during his Senior year before offering, and thought since he wasn't being highly recruited they'd have that option. Once he got a couple offers, they weren't going to be the first so what does it really matter? He doesn't seem like a huge ego guy, so the fact they didn't offer him early probably doesn't make as much difference as many of you believe it does. I'm sure they're showing him plenty of love now and if he really wants to become a Hawkeye, he will.

Exactly. It may not be fatal, but those 1-2 weeks were big. They told Martin that Iowa was responding to the other offers, not to Martin himself.
