My hunch: lawyers got involved at some point today

At some point Lick's agent called him up and told him where his bargaining power was/is. The guy is in his mid 50's and getting 2.4MM guarantees him at least a somewhat comfortable retirement.

This could be a whole lot of puffing out the chest brinksmanship.

He won't retire, he will go back to a mid major and take the team to the big dance in a few years, of this I am sure.

BINGO!

I think this deal gets messy.

I just hope that it's not a case where Lick and Barta had reached an agreement to part ways(financially as well as professionally), but then all of the rumors circulating ticked off Lick and he figured "screw em. I'll get my money". Although I doubt he talks that way.

Am I the only one who thinks this entire thread is completely ridiculous? (answer, unfortunately, is probably)

As much as I would like to trust a "hunch", I don't think major college basketball is analogous to an episode of Springer.

lol.. Just classic..

If and when any buyout negotiations took place Lick's lawyer was involved from the start. It isnt like he just got mad at some point and decided to get lawyers involved. Not when this kindve money is on the line

Just like the other threads you've started, what do you have to base this on?

I agree with this for two reasons.

1) I think Lick is a good person and a good coach. Things obviously aren't working here and that's unfortunate, but I think he does things the right way, and like any other former Hawkeye who conducted themselves with class while here I wish him well.

2) This assumes he won't be our coach next year.

There's no reason for it to get messy. There doesn't appear to be any arguable basis to terminate Lick for cause, which is the only way the University avoids the buyout (short of an agreement with Lick to reduce it). Without cause for the termination as defined in his contract, he would be owed the buyout, period. By the same token, if the University is prepared to oay the buyout, Lick has no recourse whatsoever for the termination.

Not messy at all in a legal sense. In terms of public relations, Lick might choose to turn it into a mudslinging contest as to the reasons he was terminated, but I think he'd be the big loser in any such PR battle.

Damn lawyers... always advocating for their clients' contractually bargained-for rights...
