My calm response to this game

I am as crushed as anybody but taking emotion out of it here is what I saw.

Offense
-JVB has accuracy problem and threw many balls high, this will turn into picks eventually if not corrected
-Coker dances way too much, against better defenses he will lose alot of yards
-Davis with the drop, can't do that ever and you really can't do it in that spot
+ Line blocked well, it may have not looked that way because the running game wasnt great but ISU was putting 9 in the box most every. Pass blocking was good as well, JVB had time to throw he just needs to get it our sooner.
+ JMM showed promise and hopefully becomes a good WR

Defense/ST
-No pass rush from the front 4, can't remember when he had so little pressure
-Poor tackling, ever position all game long
-Very poor kickoff coverage
+FG unit looked solid, not a small thing considering how close all our games usually are

I actually think we will be a good team by mid-season. We got beat today by a good player that made plays with his feet. Converting 3-15 and 3-20 is not easy task. Our initial coverage was there many times only to have Jantz beat us on scrambles.

I'm sure not ready to pack it in on this team.

I won't either, but we have some pretty elusive qb's to face going forward, starting with next week. We don't seem to match well against these difference makers, but it seems many more teams than us do. How come?

I liked what I saw from Kirksey, especially since he's a first year starter.

For the first three quarters it looked like we were sucessful when we ran right and got stuffed going left. Vandy tucks and runs at the first sign of pressure. It worked out okay today, but I'm not sure it's a good omen.

While it's easy to focus on the drop I think Davis made some plays today and if he'd held on to that one or our defense had held we'd be speaking much higher of him.

Marcus got some extra yards after the initial contact and certainly was a workhorse.
Hate to say it but he just may be a fumbler. He's young and should get better.

Murry wasn't pretty but he knocked in a 50 yarder and made a field goal in OT. Can't ask for much more from him.

We lost a bunch of guys to the NFL and look like a team that did. We expect our defense to bend and wait for the other team to make mistakes. When they did we let them up, time and time again. We had a bunch of opportunties to win this thing but came up short.

We'll know more next week. If we don't improve it could be a long season.

Well Sunseri ran 10 times for negative 26 yards today against Maine, not so sure how elusive he is. They run a spread, that doesn't mean he's elusive.

Vandy had an up and down day...he did miss some throws. But QB isn't even in the Top 5 when it comes to this team's areas for improvement.

1. defensive line/pass rush
2, coaching/play calling
3. team defense
4. need for a speed running back. I love Marcus but he's slow, plodding and hesitant.
5 kick coverage

My calm response is our consecutive games of not losing by more than 7, dating back to 2007, continues to grow.

Great.

I am in agreement with the overall sentiment of this thread IF... AND ONLY IF... Jantz plays at the level he played at today, for the remainder of the year. The guy manned up today, made defenders miss on multiple occasions, and made play after play. Meanwhile Vandy did his best Jake Christensen impression during the 3rd quarter.

If Jantz plays the way he did today for the rest of the season I can see IA State being in a position to win 6 or 7 games. The guy flat out made plays

Best such streak in the nation I believe, since no other fan base, program, or coach would ever keep track of this.

Team A lost by 15 and we only lost by 7 so therefore we would beat Team A by 8 obviously!

Honestly, Jantz was much better today than I thought he would be. That said, it's hard to tell if he was that good or the simple fact that when we are unable to tackle once we get to him and he eludes us then has all the time in the world to find an open receiver.
As expected the defense is a work in progress, but at what time do we realize that since our defensive linemen haven't been able to make plays or consistently get to the quarterback then maybe it's time to blitz more. Kirksey looked good getting to Jantz and I think we've got the linebackers that could apply pressure, but it's obvious that we need to be making more comotion behind the line of scrimage and blitzing may be our best option.
