MSU loses Branden Dawson for 4-5 weeks

Michigan State's Branden Dawson sidelined by broken hand - CBSSports.com

With him out and probably Payne out for the game in Iowa City next week, that gives the Hawkeyes an excellent chance to win the game.

But...sometimes the backup guys perform better when they are called on, and Izzo knows how to handle personnel.

I guess the freshmen will be getting more minutes -- Kaminski, Byrd, Ellis, and Schilling.

Is it 100% that Payne will be out? The announces on BTN said last night they expected Payne to play this weekend against Michigan.

Michigan without starting PG, now MSU without two starters?! Man, this is going to be a cake walk!

I hadn't heard that about Payne either, regardless, I was expecting him to play this weekend.

This is a big boost for us. I would never wish injury on any player, but it's pretty funny the way he did it. I haven't heard the status on Payne. They should NOT rush him back too soon, losing a few games now is insignificant when March rolls around.

I've got a hard time believing Payne will be 100%, when there was talk he'd be missing another couple weeks just a few days ago. Without Dawson, though, I'm expecting White to have a BIG game. Dawson held him in check at Carver last year and completely shut him down in the BTT, so that's a big loss for MSU (especially since White seems to be getting frustrated with himself for not being more assertive).

Izzo said earlier in the week Payne could be out for 2 more weeks. I hope MSU can beat Michigan in EL on Saturday. Iowa's chances are very good if MSU plays without Payne and Dawson.

Michigan State is beaten and broken and still 7-0. They will be tough as nails in the NCAAs if they can everyone back and healthy.

I'm sure the next men in are all 4* or better players too. tm3308 has a good point about the White and Dawson match up. I think AW finishes the season in beast mode. Not sure if Dawson could stop him this time around, but I'm ok with waiting to find out until we play in East Lansing. If white can play like he did in the second half against meat chicken, not too many people in the country are going to be able to stop him. His shooting % is crazy. He is lanky and draws contact every time, unless they let him to the rim. After seeing those pictures of stauskas before and after his off season work outs, it makes me think AW will certainly be in the NBA if he puts on 15-20 pounds of muscle.

I believe the thought was by the BTN talking heads was that Payne would not mix the game against Michigan. I don't think it was based on any real medical knowledge.

I'll be honest, when I first saw this I was happy because it'll be easier for Iowa to win. Then I thought that perhaps that wasn't a good thing to do. Then I looked closer and saw the he did it himself by hitting a table. Now I'm not only feeling ok with laughing at his injury, but he deserves it.
