MSU AD "embarrassed" by lack of students in stands

Time for these ADs to get a reality check on ticket prices. It's pretty clear supply is exceeding demand right now. This is especially true for students (if they want them in the stands) and even the general public. I suppose they are trying to maximize revenues with the current prices but if they don't sell out that's the price they pay for being a little greedy and trying to squeeze out that last nickel when it's simply not there.

My strategy would be to get the student ticket prices down. You may sacrifice a little revenue now but that's your future fan base in terms of long term season ticket holders (and athletic donors). If you don't get them to the games as a student you may never get them to the games when they move out of town and have kids.

I can't see why he didn't go after the conspiracy theory angle. They were probably kidnapped by the Illuminati.

My thoughts are that just like salaries of athletes you charge what the market will bear. Clearly the market doesn't bear these nonstop increases in ticket prices.

AD's and schools had better wise up about this. Students aren't going to change, they had better start changing how they go about getting students into the stands.

If I were AD, I'd just take a small portion of the new TV money to subsidize student ticket. Let students in free of charge for all sporting events and make it good for ALL Iowa sporting events (Basketball, football, Wrestling, swimming, baseball, etc.). Have it clearly stated that it is first come first serve at all event, and students are capped at X number. A big part of the college experience is going to these games, and the students are getting soaked with tuition costs already. Using funds from the Athletic Department to create a loyal customer base of Hawkeye fans for the future. They will be the ones some day buying season tickets and donate to the Athletic department in the future.

A couple of really good points especially the "small portion of new tv money". How much money is going into each B1g 10 teams coffers from new TV contracts? Is Iowa now getting 24 million dollars more a year, is it something like that?

That is a lot of money whatever it is from TV.

You could charge the students a nominal handling fee of a few bucks to $5 to get their ticket because your scheme has some extra overhead in keeping track of tickets, having security when students are in line, etc.

But you and others are correct, get their butts in the seats, and give them a good price on hot dogs, popcorn and a pop. Your coffers will also suffer by the lack of ancillary purchases when you have empty seats.
