Mr. Davis's return: exorcising of the demons

Seeing Mr. Davis and his squad get the applause today...and especially the love for Mr. Davis... I can't help but feel this marked a turning point for Iowa basketball.

Fran has had the ship moving in the right direction...but it takes time to turn a big ship around. Watching those pregame intros...and seeing the team just OWN the game from the opening tip...I got a feeling that today is the "corner". The ship has been turned around...and is beginning to bear on new territory.

Recognizing Mr. Davis Davis was a key element is exorcising all the bad vibes.

It's been said before...but today especially....

WE'RE BACK BABY!

We're definitely back!!

I agree with all your points. I have a much better feeling about the future of this program than I've had in a while. A decent number of wins so far this year and some games that we could/should have also won.

I was waiting for this post. Surprised it took so long.

My Take: Great day for Hawkeye BB. Fran has had this program going in the right direction. I will not disagree it was nice recognition for the 86-87 team. But this had no bearing on what Fran is doing, will do or what he has already done.

Gets me to thinking.

Any chance Steve Alford is AIRBHG? He never got over being a basketball coach at a football school.

i don't think the OP had any intention to mean that it did. It was nice to give Mr. Davis his long over due thanks for a job well done.

Didn't Lick bring Mr. Davis in at some point in his first year? I seem to remember that, but maybe I am mistaken.

No doubt that team and Mr. Davis should be honored. It was deserved. However the OP was a bit over the top for me. Especially with this comment "I can't help but feel this marked a turning point for Iowa basketball" Lick brought Mr. Davis in to practice and to spend time with the team soon after he was hired. So the demon talk is overblown.

He brought him in to watch practices. Mr. Davis has never attended an Iowa game as an Iowa fan until today. He was obviously back at CHA as the Drake coach a few years back.

Many former players, including one I've spoken to personally on several occasions... talked about how Lick (and Alford) did not make former players feel welcome. There was a big "disconnect". And it's no secret that Mr. Davis got a bit of a raw deal on his way out. So I think today was overdue.

Fran's the man, he's doing a great job. Today's events just added to the positive vibe and the timing was pretty damn good. IOWA basketball hasn't felt this good in awhile. All the better that today combined the new...and the old. I doubt I'm the only one that had that feeling.

Don't know about that, but for some bizarre reason, Learfield Sports had decided to have an interview between Alford and Dolph before the game. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot did Alford have to do with the '86-'87 team other than maybe playing against them? And since Dolph ran out of material so quickly the convo turned to his time coaching Gatens.

As my 7 year old says, "Akward....."

That's really weird.

Learfield Sports sucks, Steve Alford sucks and Todd Licklighter sucks.

Can't get rid of learfield but thank god we are rid of SA and TL. They were never good fits and made millions of dollars at the expense of Iowa BB.

It is a turning point and bring back Mr. Davis every year for anything. He was a winner and his teams entertained, was a good teacher, a better coach and even better man.

Wish someone would do the research and an analysis of what every win that Tom Davis coached and cost (in terms of his salary), vs what each of the miniscule numbers that SA and TL put up?

Just hoping Fran can continue to do what he's doing and make Mr. Davis proud.

I am not going to lie. I teared up at the applause given to Coach Davis. It was a fantastic ceremony and really helped set the tone for the game. Also the student section was fantastic.

Mr. Davis haters say he took that team to the elite 8 with Ravelings recruits and that is true but he had to rerecruit those guys and turned BJ and others into stars....

I am biased because I didn't grow watching Iowa bball with Lute or George, but instead the Doctor, reading Rick Brown's pieces in the DMR the last few weeks made me appreciate Mr. Davis even more and I didn't think that was possible.

Tom Davis had a fantastic record while at Iowa. I believe he had 9 or 10 NCAA tournament teams.

There are 4 Iowa coaches on the Mount Rushmore of Iowa basketball: Ralph Miller, Tom Davis, Lute Olson and bucky O'Connor. Let's hope Fran is the fifth.
