I know a lot of people are impressed with Tom's getting into the NCAAs most years. However if the criteria was the same back then as it is now he would not made it as many times. His theory was to beat up on softies in the non conference games win half of his conference games and get 20 wins. Back the 20 win usually was good enough, now it is not. AS I remember BB took the scheduling away from him because he played so many patsies. Also I think not getting Raef Lefrentz really hurt him. Maybe not getting him as much as not recruiting him as hard as Williams did.

Flawed premise. Coaches and AD's tailor their scheduling to the criteria as the criteria evolve, but you may have forgotten that SOS was a major topic of discussion back then in years the Hawks were left out on the bubble.

SOS really became a front burner topic when Iowa became the first Big Ten team to ever have a winning record in conference, win 20 games, and not make the NCAA tourny. But it had been of a growing concern in the fan base for some time that was hurting attendance in December...too many cupcakes. This was before the ACC Challenge and UNI's rise, so it seemed to come down one good home game in the non-conference....vs ISU or a legit home and away team like KU...that was it.

Disagree totally with the OP.

NCAA seeds, by year:
1987 - 2 seed
1988 - 5 seed
1989 - 4 seed
1991 - 7 seed
1992 - 9 seed
1993 - 4 seed
1996 - 6 seed
1997 - 8 seed
1999 - 5 seed

The 1997 team went 12-6 and finished 2nd in the Big Ten, yet were given only an 8 seed. This team was not on the bubble.

I would say maybe the 1992 team may have been the only one of those teams that were very close to being on the bubble.

The rest of Mr. Davis's teams were locks in the years that they made it.

Such a distant memory. I miss the days of making the tourney about every year.

In the out of conference, I think TD would have been pretty close to the same success level today. Because the style of play was such a departure from the norm for opponents, its not easy to get ready to play that.

If Mr. Davis would have been the coach still, he would have probably turned it over to his son around 2004....maybe 2005. BB would have forced TD to make some philosophy changes in regards to scheduling by 2000 and definitely by time his son took over.

Understand your premise, but kinda a moot point, imo

Also in Davis' last year, I thought our OOO schedule (@KU for one) was quite a bit tougher than it was the previous year, or so it seemed. If I was to guess, I would say that may have been in response to getting left out of the NCAA's the year before because of the weak schedule.
