This season is more than just a disappointment. From what I thought was possible, a 12-0 season, to a 7-5 season is just unthinkable. I never thought that the defense would be the piece that let us down this year. I guess that Pat Angerer was more than just a senior moving on to the next level. Him, along with Eds and AS was what was missing this year on the defensive end of the football. Our defense had the chance to win ever game this year and they just couldn't hold the line. Yes, the loss of Prater and Hyde in the Minn. game was big, but it doesn't erase the fact that they were both on the field for the Arizona fourth quarter drive, the Wisconsin fourth quarter drive, the Northwestern fourth quarter drives, and the OSU fourth quarter drive. The defense just wasn't able to handle the pressure that was put on them from the beginning. I still think we have one of the best defensive lines in the country, but when the offense knows what your going to do, they can game plan to work against it. Why was AC not a huge force this yr. Simple. Three step drops. That is how you beat Iowa. Sometimes you have to game plan against your opponent. Iowa's DC doesn't seem to think that they need to do much. Just go in, drop zone and run a few stunts. Then either force the qb out of the pocket or force him to throw quickly. Well, if you are reaching into your bench for Freshman LB's, then you might want to rethink your defensive strategy. Shake it up. Blitz a little. I understand it was hard to do in the Minn. game with Prater and Hyde out, but come on, we we're in this position more than once this year.
One last thing regarding today's game. Minn. had teeshirts made up four weeks ago for this game. How in the HELL does Iowa come out like they did. Kirk has always had a problem getting his team up to play for a game that the other team wants so bad. AKA - Iowa State. Not that I want KF gone or anything like that, but I just get so frustrated when the team seems soooo unprepared to match the level of their opponents.
I could write and complain more, but I've obviously had way to much to drink.
