More NIT talk, comparing this year to 06-07

The last time Iowa was in a position to even talk about post season was 2006-07. That year we went 17-14 overall but finished in a tie for 4th in the B10 with a 9-7 record. The NCAA tournament took 6 B10 teams that year, including Michigan State who finished behind Iowa in the B10 standings at 8-8 AND got drubbed by Wisky 70-57 in the 1st round of the B10 tournament (MSU did win 22 games that year though). IIRC that was the 1st time EVER a team went 9-7 in the B10 and DIDN'T get in the NCAA tournament.

What made that year more maddening was the NIT ALSO passed on Iowa, instead taking a 22-13 (8-8) Michigan team that also finished behind Iowa in B10 play. That year was a little quirky by NIT standards in that 8 teams got automatic bids to the NIT because they won their conference regular season but failed to win their conference tournament and qualify for the NCAA. Granted I'm pulling this out of my arse but I have to believe that number is on the high end.

I should also point out that Iowa did itself no favors by getting shelled by 20 in their first round B10 tourney game against 5 seed Purdon’t.

I think it’s fair to say that barring a 3-1 finish (which would make us a lock for the NIT) we need to win at least one game in the B10 tourney before we’d get a shot at the NIT.

Jeez, is my reasoning finally starting to wear on you? :D

Since the NIT has lowered their participants to 32 teams here have been the amount of auto bids each season:

2011 - 14
2010 - 8
2009 - 5
2008 - 8
2007 - 8

The team that probably kept Iowa out of the 2007 NIT was North Carolina State. At the end of the regular season they were 15-14 and had finished 10th in the ACC. Then they went on this miracle run in the ACC Tournament upsetting Duke in the first round, beat Virginia, beat VTech, and eventually lost to North Carolina in the championship. They had the worst record of all the at large bids in the NIT that year.

In 2006 was the last time the Big Ten got 3 into the NIT but that was the last year it was a 40 team field. The Big Ten has gotten 2 into the tournament 3 out of the past 5 years.

ohh and all the bten teams that jumped Iowa that year had 20+ wins AND were within one game of Iowa in the big ten standings. that is not going to be the case this year.

maybe, I am tired of arguing with you about it and it would be nice to see Iowa finish .500 and get into the NIT. But let's hope there are not 14 auto bids being given out this year.

I'll take that for a concession speech.

Yes it would, six auto bids would suit me just fine.
