Monday Morning Quarterback

Jared Clauss offers his observations from Iowa's 32-31 loss to Central Michigan in this week's Monday Morning Quarterback.

Jon- to be honest I find these MMQ posts to be pretty "bland" to put it nicely. I would be helpful if someone with the insight as a player and analyst could give us some better review of the game. You read this post and you would come away thinking Iowa won the game. I am sure Mr. Clauss does not want to bash the program, but some more objective review of the game and the state of the program from the eyes of a former great player would be more interesting than what it is today.

And while I am at it, the videos on this site are getting pretty out of control.

I'm in agreement with this. My wife, who knows next to nothing about football but loves the Hawks to death, could have told you more than half of what Jared put in there.

The problem is you are not going to get an honest accessment from anyone that covers Iowa sports for a living because they are afraid of ruffling feathers and losing their 'access'.
Jon comes as close to any of offering his true opinion. But he still pulls his punches.

Things may not be as bad as we think they are. This team is a few bounces of the ball of being undefeated. We just are not getting the breaks we have in the past. I'm just as frustrated because we should be better that those bounces. The 2009 season could have been a train wreck if not for those bounces.

So is kirk bouncing the ball away from Iowa? When you dont know whats going on and youre the coach is that considered a bad bounce?

I personally much prefer Hawkeyegamefilm's assessments. However, I'm not sure why Jared isn't able to be critical. I'm sure he's a fan like most of us, and does he really "report" on what KF says or what he sees as an outsider. If the review isn't critical when it needs to be, why do you trust the review?

With all due respect, you make your own breaks and you make your own bounces. This program is too far along and has too much history and pride to need "breaks" or "bounces" against the likes of Central Michigan, which will end up being one of the 10 worst teams in all of college football this year. After year 14 of the Ferentz Era and year 33 of the Hayden/Ferentz Era, we should be in a position where we are throat-stomping these teams and driving all will from them by the end of the 1st quarter. The fact that we aren't says all you need to know about the direction of this team and this program in general. When a program goes from 11 wins, to 8 wins to 7 wins to probably 5/6 wins, then you've got a real problem. The list of coaches that have been able to resurrect a program twice is probably one name long: Bill Snyder and he ain't walking through that door.

I like the optimism, but Iowa just lost at Kinnick Stadium to one of the worst teams in the MAC

Things are not good. KF has now lost more games to teams we were double digit favorites to than anyone else in CFB.

There is also not a lot of younger talent on this roster that gets me too excited. Not to mention our schedule will only get tougher going forward.

Some like Jared's takes, others prefer HawkeyeGameFilm's takes. Each is different. Ultimately the choice to click and read is up to you.

Jon, I'm just curious, but is Jared part of the media, or is he doing this as a "fan's perspective, with football experience". What is his connection to the program at the moment?

Jon, I understand your point. I think they could both be assets to the site. Gamefilm's is a great "clinical" breakdown of the games. Jared's takes could be great, they are just boring coach speak. The title of MMQ is pretty misleading, because that is not what he does. They are just homer takes that I think could be better as a former player. Take the feedback for what it is worth.

We all saw what Iowa didn't do well. Jared talks about some things he sees through the eyes of someone who played at Iowa and in the NFL and sees some things they did well. HGF's content is more critical. There is room for both, I believe....and both cost the same to view ;)

No, he is a former Big Ten and NFL football player who watches Iowa games and provides some thoughts on what he sees. His stuff will likely always focus on some of the positives he sees. So you have advanced warning as to what value you want to place on it.

I place the "Frank Drebbin Seal of Approval" on it! Please disperse, there's nothing to see here! :D

The irony of complaining about content on a free board may be lost to some Jon. I like both reads fwiw.

I actually prefer to listen to Marv Cook as he will pretty much tell you like he sees it. Like me, he hates what he calls "stupid football". I didn't get the chance to catch him on Cotlar today like I usually do on Tuesdays, but I'm sure he was at no loss for words on the performance (or lack thereof) on Saturday.

Great! Sounds like you have another free outlet to get some opinion. If everyone said the same things, everyone but one person would be unnecessary.
