Iowa's James Vandenberg is one of the few strictly pro-style quarterbacks in the Big Ten. Vandenberg's 3,022 yards passing were third to Michigan State's Kirk Cousins and Wisconsin's Russell Wilson, both now in the NFL.

“It's just a sign of the times,â€￾ Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said at Big Ten media days. “The read option stuff's become bigger and bigger. It shifts this way and shifts that way. There's no magical way to do things,â€￾ he said.

It's no surprise that Iowa's Ferentz, an old-school coach and proponent of passing quarterbacks, only cares about the result.

“There's always typically a flavor of the day but at the end of the day, it all comes down to execution,â€￾ he said.

Yeah, well, go to CNN, to SPORTS, and read a very interesting article on Nick Saban and his approach to success at Alabama. Its long, apparently was an article in Sports Illustrated. Much of it sounds a whole lot like Kirk, except for the recruiting advantages held by Saban. I know he is not a popular figure on this board, and certainly not with me. However, I was fascinated by the article and its implications for Iowa football.

Funny how two of the teams that did not have the spread system...Wisky and MSU,played for the conference title last year,and are among the favs again this year.
As KF said, it ebbs and flows. Look for Michigan to go back to pocket passing QBs after D-Rob leaves after this season. So, in the Legends,it will be MSU,Michigan,and Iowa as traditional systems....guess which three programs will dominate this division? Nebraska has some better passers coming in also.

Give me a passer first,who can run,and I am fine.

Like iv said before, Ruddock will be our mobile QB. not saying he will be a DRob or anything like that. But he does have some speed to run it if he has to.
