Mitch King Breaks Down Miller's 4th Q Scramble

Thought this part was particularly interesting:

He rolled out to the wide side of the field. When he did, LTP and Meier were hustling to cut him off, taking good angles to the ball. What most people don't see until it's too late is the back side of the play. Ott and Davis both assumed Miller would continue on his path, and they took poor angles and "loafed" to the ball (I consider it a loaf when I can see significant change of speed in a player during a play. GO FULL SPEED ALL THE TIME).
The backside end should be pursuing the ball carrier’s backside shoulder and looking for cut back or rollouts. Ott ran flat down the line of scrimmage and allowed Miller to roll back (because LTP and Meier pull him up) and exposed our man coverage to the fullest. This is when I saw Ott change speed, and it was too late because Miller picked up lead blockers in his offensive linemen and was able to get the corner for the first down.

Back shoulder contain was the missed assignment. Others on here would know more about it, but their assignment as I understand it would have been back shoulder contain.

King knows from what he's saying. He always went full speed. Lesson learned, hopefully.

My buddies and I were saying the same thing at the bar (one is a HS coach). We both say that Ott gave up on the play, rather that cutting off any backside escape for Miller. It is a shame, as that play should have been a sack of Miller.

As a DE, if you cross the face of that OT and don't get to the QB, you've just gambled and lost and left the entire field to your side open. In a case where the rollout action goes away and the play comes back and you miss, that's a killer. Cutback, boot, reverse...and if it's pass action going away, you have to stay on the "high" side of the QB (read: the backside shoulder).

I get what Mitch is saying here...and I agree on the Ott and Davis comments...loafing though, ok, maybe...but Ott showed good speed to try to cut him off...it was just a bit too late and the block got there. What I saw was Meier not take a good angle to pursue...he wasn't going to beat him to the corner, but LTP was. The fact that Meier allowed him to reverse out was a collosal error from what I saw...he should have seen LTP with the angle and anticipated that Miller would reverse out and instead he committed down the field...and allowed the reverse out. He should have forced him to LTP or to go that direction.

Forgot about those HuddlePass things. Thanks for reminding me. Thought it was funny that Schnoor talks about having doors on the toilets in Beaver Stadium being a positive thing. Wonder how he feels about the showers?

And the refs missed 2 holding calls. No one reverses field twice behind the line of scrimmage without being sacked, unless there is holding. It is just not possible.

Exactly right. Meier went for the kill instead of trusting LTP. Louie had him contained on the outside, he wasn't going anywhere except out of bounds. Meier actually went between Miller and the containing lineman and, because of his inertia, overshot the slippery Miller. This left his gap open and Ott didn't have the speed to close it.

Pursuing LBs and DBs have to realize that frequently they are moving faster than then the ball carrier who, because of their slower speed, can cut sharper and elude contact. They have to use their vision and see where their team mates are and adjust their angle accordingly. I actually loved the look on LTP's face as he was closing in on Miller right before Meier cut him off.

I can generally live with a mistake like that, especially from a young player. Meier got overly aggressive, which isn't an uncommon mistake for a young player to make. I thought Meier might eventually make a positive impact when he walked on, and he's been a pretty good contributor this season.

Tm, i agree. Nate and drew still have a long ways to go, but look like they will make a nice duo in the future. Reason i agree is, sometimes things only sink in with play time. Our dl will be really really good next year and we will need that with new lb's. Just hpoe to god that secondaty can perform or it will be a waste of a good dl. I guess if i were on the dl i would be chewing arse, saying we did not work this hard to improve the unit just to have you guys give up points all the time. That is like a slap in the face.

We have one safety out of position all the time. It should be correctable, but he reads the offense wrong at an alarming rate. I agree, taking a wrong angle of pursuit is a fundamental most effectively learned at game speed. The safety's lack of reading certain offensive plays at this point in the season is more concerning to me.

At breakfast on Sunday I was still simmering down form the game, and I started talking about moving a wide receiver to safety. Admittedly it takes me a full day after Iowa plays before logic sets in again.

Having said all that, I think this team will do ok for the rest of the year. I think we'll probably lose one game where everyone will melt down, and the rest will be close, with a couple of victories.

yes the pursuers... especially one of them (not sure which) took a horrible angle and ran straight up field allowing him to cut back and have all the day light he needed.

If he forces him upfield or towards the sideline they contain him.

Next year, Ott, Davis, LTP, Cooper, Meier, and the two big guys, Faith and Jaleel are going to give us a pretty damn good rotation. After looking at Spearman, I think that kid is going to grow into a monster DE. He's 17 and at least 230 right now...he seems bigger now than what he was at the start of the season. This kid is going to get another growth spurt and end up at 250 without even trying. He looks like he has that type of frame. I think he ends up being a DE and just an offense wrecker and what we sorely need...a playmaker that has the burst to get to the QB in a hurry. Honestly, I wish he were redshirting, but we obviously need special teams help...and to build depth at LB.

To be honest i did not even see it (that play). Thing to remember here is qbs like that have shredded much more experienced guys before, coutless times. As long as it does not become a problem, i see no problem.

I'm not being critical. I think the game speed experience is one they'll learn from, especially against an athlete at the level of tOSU's qb.

Most of what I see this year is extremely encouraging. I'm hoping my three year outlook with the new coaches is playing out.

They've improved every week, except two where they went backwards. One was a let down week, and I'm hoping the other was a legit team, which I believe MSU is. At least in the B1G. It all feels like 2008, except I think it feels more fragile this year.

tm, Meier received a scholarship.
