Mike Gesell=Jake Christensen

Mike in his last 13 big games(last 8 last year and 4 majors this year plus UNI) is now 1-12. When does Coach Fran realize that
he is not a point guard. Do we have a Ricky Stanzi?

Gessell is not the problem. The fact that nobody else on the team is a threat to attack the basket off the dribble is the problem. Gessell is an average Big 10 starter.

There isn't a good team in basketball that relies exclusively on their point guard to create offense off the dribble. The problem is that Clemmons, Jok, JO, Uthoff, and Elingson are not threats to attack off the dribble. They don't create for others and only Jok and Utoff create for themselves, which primarily consists of contested pull up jumpers.

The problem is Gessell is our best perimeter player.

Gessell is definitely not the issue. He is actually the only person that usually gives you what you expect. We have a team full of weak big men that can't play inside and shooters that are afraid to shoot and when they do can't hit anything.

gesell = some random Iowa QB named jake isn't the problem, the issue is there's no stanzi, bethard, or brad banks on the bench (yes, I know kyle mccann's first name wasn't jake but the comparison is apt)

I'm as frustrated as the rest of you.

The reason no one on the team are threats to attack off the dribble is because the opponent doesn't have to respect their outside shooting ability. Most players that attack off the dribble are either unbelievably quick, which other than Dickerson, or the defense has to close out to protect against the three.

Nobody is going to close out on our guards until they start draining threes and I have serious doubts that will happen this season.

This. Its a whole team problem. There is nobody that is making teams really defend them.

Pretty darn good post with one exception.

I'm not sure Gesell is an average Big 10 plate. He's below average but if he had some talent around him he could suffice and agree he's our best option at this point which is the problem.

DING! DING! DING! We have a winner! If we don't start shooting above 30% from the field, we aren't going to win many games. We get plenty of open looks but no one can make a shot. If I were an Iowa opponent coach, I'd pack a 2-3 zone and force them to shoot from outside... outside being outside of the lane, not just from the three point arc. Aside from that, all you need to do is make sure you box out White.

Gessell started off shooting well, but in the second half the ENTIRE TEAM could not make a shot. UNI was saying "You couldn't hit water if you fell out of a boat" (apologies to Crash Davis). And we couldn't.

Think about it. If we shoot 40% (which is still bad) we score 6 more baskets; that's 12 more points, more if we make even one three point shot. That gives us at least 56 points instead of 44. If we shoot 45% (which is acceptable and is what UNI did) we score 9 more baskets and we win the game easily even without three point shots. Instead we shoot a miserable 27.5% as a team.
