In a press release that came out after 11 PM Iowa time last night, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio announced that Sr. co-captain middle linebacker Max Bullough has been suspended for the Rose Bowl for a violation of team rules.

Dantonio and the team are obviously disappointed. And while I feel bad for MSU and do believe that gives them a major hit as they prepare to face Stanford in the Rose Bowl, I am actually heartened by this. I have grown weary ages ago of head coaches gladly suspending reserves (and even kicking them off the team) but giving their star players a suspension of maybe "the 1st quarter" or something like that (are you listening Bobby Bowden? Tom Osborne?).

Hayden Fry once sent home two players from (I believe it was) the Alamo Bowl some years ago, including a starting D-lineman by the name of Joe Mott over a complaint of trouble caused by these men where someone called Coach Fry. It's regrettable, but is the only right thing to do. We did win that bowl game.

He must've killed somebody, because we know Dantonio plays guys two days after they're released from jail.

By the way, Mr. Bullough apparently has been in trouble before, some incident in Colorado back in 2011. And so he may have been on a "one more strike of any kind and you are out, period" sentence at MSU. Regardless, MSU will continue preps without him.

being a team captain only requires on the field performance - the type of man you are does not matter at MSU.

Man! I would like to go in and amend my bowl pics in the pools I am in. Distractions like this are never a good thing, not to mention how they will miss his on-field performance in what should be a pretty even match-up.

I was counting on MSU to be one of the B1G wins on 1/1. Damn!

Wasn't that incident just the day BEFORE the Iowa game? Pretty sure he pretty much got a ride from the pokie to Kinnick. Pretty pathetic, and loved seeing KF put a beating on Sparty that day.

I thought he got out on Thursday and played on Saturday. Sadly, that was about the only good game we played in conference play in 2010.

Chris L. Rucker walks out of jail, and back into Michigan State's staring lineup?

Michigan State's secondary isn't in such dire straits, but the undefeated Spartans may still welcome back starting cornerback Chris L. Rucker from a two-game absence for a critical visit to Iowa on Saturday – just two days after he walked out of jail and apparently back onto the depth chart Thursday at the end of an eight-day sentence.

To be fair, in the case of Rucker, he had learned his lesson. I mean, shucks, look at that hang dog expression!

I'll be waiting for the tell all book exposing the MSU football program written by Max Bullough within the next year or so.

This is a very courageous act by Coach Dantonio. Bullough is a FABULOUS player and one of the keys to their defense.

Bullough is a 3rd generation Spartan. His brother is a freshman on the team, and another brother is a committed recruit. He's a 4-year starter, team captain, all-conference, All-American, and Academic All-American. Given Dantonio's track record on discipline, Bullough must have done something pretty crazy for a guy with his credentials and pedigree on an off the field to be suspended for the most important Michigan State football game in 25 years.

Or it is a university code of conduct/academic issue that the football program has no control over. Which do you think is more likely?

that would be my guess...and besides Dantonio has made it to his precious Rose Bowl. Winning it is just gravy ;)
