Michael Lois Signing, Aussie Punter Added, Walk-Ons Announced by Iowa Football

KF has presser today at noon, so we'll have more football content this afternoon.

Didn't Iowa bring in an Aussie punter a few years ago, but he didn't pan out?

Isn't Sleep-Dalton from Australia? yes.

I believe you're thinking of Jonny Mullings. that's the guy.

Sleep-Dalton had punting experience coming from ASU. If I recall, Mullings had no experience. What about this new mate? (trying to make him feel at home)

New guy has never played in an American football game.

Isn’t it truly amazing how much Iowa football, and us as fans, truly rely on a great punter to get 2 more wins a season? Most places in America the punter is an afterthought. Not in Iowa City.

Which is why a few years ago, when our punting was one of the worst in football, it really hurt us. Lots of ‘hidden yardage’ involved in punting.

Well most places love passing and getting up and down the field. Kirk loves punting.

When you're a developmental program like we are and can't bring skill position athletes in by the truckload, then special teams can often be the tipping point between having a great year and having a below average year.

Even in 2002, when we had really good skill guys, we don't win the B1G that year without Kaeding as our kicker, Bradley as our punter and the return and coverage units we had. Hell, the Purdue game alone that year was won by special teams.

I am not too worried about the fact that he has never punted in a game. Our coach flew to Australia to watch him kick at the academy. Let's face it, its not that complicated a skill. Either you are really good at it or not, and I think a coach can get a sense for that without live fire coming in at the guy. And, in Aussie's rules football, you often times get flattened during a kick, which theoretically should rarely happen under our rules. I have a good feeling about this kid if he was offered a schollie with no tape at all. He must have been impressive.

Iowa is one of very few schools that would honor a scholarship to a guy who will probably never play a game of football. Gotta be proud of that.
