Iowa picked up its 14th commitment in the 2018 recruiting class Friday when Michigan LB Ben VanSumeren jumped onboard. He spoke with HN about his pledge:

I don't normally get excited about recruits/commitments, but I really like this kid. I'd be shocked if he's not a really good player for Iowa.

After watching his highlight clip, this dude is A MAN AMONG BOYS!
Runs angry with the ball and when he's on D he absolutely freight-trains anybody in his way. Last time I saw a HS kid hit like this was Pat Angerer, and we all know what kind of a Hawkeye he turned out to be.
Welcome to Iowa City Ben - you chose wisely to wear the Black & Gold!
GO HAWKS!

I don't know what Iowa's career record for interceptions by a linebacker is,
but I think this kid will own it someday.

Wow this kid is a mutant compared to the other kids in these clips. I suspect he is from a small division? To lazy to look myself. Either way he definitely looks like a D1 player. He might be ready to play day 1. Just got to learn the D youngster and you should have a bright future here.

Seems like another classic under-the-radar Iowa target.

It will be interesting to see where he ends up. They are recruiting him at OLB, but ultimately I could see him as a Matt Roth type at DE.

I could also see him at FB and TE. Maybe like a superback. Either way this kid is versatile. I think the biggest need is probably LB which is why that's where they are recruiting him to play.

Town of Essexville MI is about 3,500. They have one high school so about the size of Waukon - home of Parker Hesse.

That kind of speed, jumps, feet = Niemann backer

This kid looks legit with size n build already.

How do we keep sniffing these guys out? Seriously. Do they camp with us? If not how does no one else pick up on him? I get it as a sophomore or junior, but after his senior year.

Thank you Ben for committing BEFORE THE GAME.
You were the ray of sunshine before the kirkkloud rained on us
