Mental Appraoch to the Rose

I have concerns. I have seen that we are taking a good practice schedule. I hope that players don't see this as a disappointment. It's the Rose Bowl. If they don't see the opportunity here that would be sad. I am not sending excitement from players or KF.

KF on expanding football playoffs:

“We had our opportunity. We came up three points short. And hopefully next year we can push over that wall. We’re not looking back. We’re where we’re at, and we’re excited about where we’re at and make the most of this next opportunity.â€￾

its not just an opportunity. It's the Rose Bowl.

The players will be sky high. they can have 60 years of Rose Bowl Winning Team reunions if they win. They can set another standard at 13-1.

Ironically msu was in this position last year. They used Stanford as a stepping stone and the Hawks have the same opportunity. This game is huge for the Iowa program and I believe the Hawks understand that and will give max effort. I like our chances for a win to cap off a tremendous season that I'll never forget. Starting to get that weird feeling that I carried with me since the 7-0 mark. Get the axes out Hawks and chop those trees down! GO HAWKS!!!

I've got to think that, ever since Kirk took the job, one of the top things, if not the top thing on his bucket list as a coach was to win the Rose Bowl. He finally gets his shot. He was here when it was Hayden't biggest goal and I've got to think some of that ran off on him. I'm not worried about it.

Football is a game of emotion, The Iowa Hawkeyes will bring it, and often, Stanford is a bunch of West Coast pu$$ies....the only detriment is the delay between games, but we wll prevail...

I think they will be pumped up to play but probably not to the level of the conference championship game. That was the best Ive seen the Hawks play in many years.

The reality of the situation now is that there is the playoffs and then everything else.

It's gotta be tough. They were a half yard from playing for everything

Man, if those players can't get sky high for the Rose Bowl, they deserve to lose. I mean seriously, it's payback time against the PAC 12 for the thrashings we took following the 1981(28-0), 1985 (45-28, thanks to Ronnie Harmon), and 1990 (46-34) seasons. This IS a must win game, and Iowa needs to look at it that way. The benefits of a win will be enormous.

CJ needs to be 100% healthy and very mobile to slow down Stanford's pass rush. And play good old smash-mouth football..

I don't take it as not sensing excitement from the players. Everything I hear and read is pretty much like this group has approached the entire season, it's a business trip and they have a job to do. It's worked out pretty well so far.

Agree with FranklinHawk. However, I question those who think history (Pac 12 payback, "best Iowa team all-time", etc.) will somehow play a part in the team's attitude towards this game. I doubt it works that way with today's generation. To me, this team played the whole season with a mystical national championship goal in its collective mind, right up the last play of the B1G championship game. Now that the mystique has been shattered (no matter how close they came to beating MSU), you wonder if they can recapture the motivation that propelled them to 12 and 0. We'll know a lot more after the Rose Bowl gets played!

First, being sky high doesn't guarantee a win or a loss, talent and turnovers and missed opportunities
Second,They weren't even born when we lost those games
Third,If you look at a game as a must win then you're setting your self up to fail
Forth,CJ isn't going to be 100% he needs surgery
Play your best, minimize mistakes and we will be there to support the team.13-1 sounds good considering where everyone thought we would be.Go Hawks

It's true they weren't born then. But they understand and respect Hawkeye history, and are very aware of Fry's legacy. I understand Hayden probably won't attend due to medical issues, I hope they Skype him into the locker room beforehand!

I have a feeling that the players are upset because they are still not getting credit for how good they are. It annoys me anyway, that Iowa gets so much credit for a close loss to MSU. Iowa is good enough to win that game and could have if they had played their best game. Iowa still has has something to prove.

Now if Iowa would have been blown out in the CCG, I can see that deflating the team, but thats not what happened.

I am worried about next year though. Expections will be higher and players may not have enough left in the tank to do it 2 years in a row.

I always thought Ferentz took the team down to Fairfield to learn transcendental meditation before bowl week every year. Its like if just 1% of a football teams becomes one with the earth then the whole season will be a success win or lose. Can you imagine the offensive linemen jumping up and down on mattresses for hours?
