Meet the backups .... (on the DL)

Steve Bigach (photo #15) seems to finally be healthy enough to practice ... that's great news. Hopefully he can make some positive strides in his development. When healthy, he had been garnering some buzz.

Dom Alvis (photo #16, among others) has had the bad luck of contending with a few injuries too. However, considering the high praise that he's earned from Norm and Coach K ... it sounds like he could have the chops to be a future starter for us at DE. Anyhow, it's great to see him healthy.

Joe Forgy (photo #16) apparently was good enough during summer workouts to earn a little recognition ... he earned his way on the depth chart, at least entering camp. Anyhow, Forgy was a force when playing in the JUCO ranks ... and that was even with him being a VERY raw talent (he had rather little high school football experience). Anyhow,
he's a guy who could work his way into being a solid contributer.

Mike Daniels (photo #20, among others) is obviously more than "just" a backup. He's really our 5th starting guy on the DL ... unfortunately we can only field 4 guys at a time. He's a guy who will start in 2011 and Iowa fans will be possibly be surprised about how we won't lose a beat with him in.

LeBron Daniel (photo #24, among others) is a guy who has garnered an increasing amount of praise from Norm. He's already shown flashes and I've really thought that he's played solidly on special teams. I'll be very excited to see how he improves through the 2010 campaign.

There are obviously others ... however, I was just going off of the guys who I obviously noticed in the photo-gallery. I was primarily just happy to see that a lot of guys were healthy (knock on wood).

Daniel is a guy who really suprised me with his size last season and he looks even more solid this year. It will be interesting to see if he splits reps vs. EIU or just takes over Binns role for the game. Nardo shocked me during the spring game. Much more than I expected. He could hold off Bigach and the freshmen.

My nephew went to high school with Dominic Alvis. He is a great kid and has added the size needed to play on the d-line. Going to be fun watching him play this year. Yes, he battled some injuries during the Spring. Look forward to seeing him healthy and on the field!

I too am very pleased that Nardo has made such positive strides in his development. Of course, he's a guy from PA who still chose to walk-on to our program ... I think that that is a little telling about the sort of determination that the young man brings to the table.

I'd add that I anticipate that Kreiter is a kid who could potentially (and eventually) make some noise too. When watching some of the drills, I was pretty surprised/impressed with what he was bringing to the table.

Also, on the official Hawk website, it was kinda cool seeing the interview with Carl Davis. He's apparently rooming with Christian Ballard ... and it sounds like Ballard is being a pretty good mentor to him. If the older guys really do a good job of mentoring the younger guys ... that can really help the young guys to accelerate their development.
