MD v Nebby

Was just gonna say something about this.

It's another close game that expect turtles to win but props to Nebby for giving #4 all they handle.

Even bigger props to Nebby crowd. Loud, involved and sounds like an incredible home atmosphere.

If only Carver could come close. Went to NwU and, yes, it was NwU, not Maryland, but, still, it was YOUR top 3 (at the time) ranked team! The crowd enthusiasm was a complete embarrassment. Top it off, it looked like a Syrian refugee rampage for the Turkish borders with nearly 4 minutes to go!!

Hawks fans might be loyal but they pretty much suck balls when it comes to atmosphere.

Much talk about trying to "enhance the gameday experience", it's time to devote a little attention to Carver.

Eh, it's plenty loud for big games. It'll be loud for Indiana I'm sure. It does look goofy when we're number 5 and have a bunch of empty seats though. I guess we're still not recovered from Alford days? I don't know. Maybe when you're good at every thing every one is too broke to go to all the games.

I get what your saying. And yes, nebby has great crowds and support. Iowa/Carver game atmosphere could improve. But a couple things...

1) There is a population of over a million people within 45 minutes of Lincoln. About 100k within 45 minutes of Iowa City.

Less important but still...

2) Iowa competes with ISU, UNI, Drake for bball fan support, nebby competes only with Creighton (UNO maybe).

Again, there is literally 10 times more population within an hour drive. That weighs in even more for weekday games.

Also, not sure you can compare crowds when playing #4 Maryland and a pretty poor NW team.

But yes, always want the best experience possible and Iowa could improve there.

can't believe I was pulling for Maryland, any other team but Nebby and I would have been all in. I think Maryland looses 1 or 2 more games, just not that impressed with them.

Get the students down on the floor like everybody else does and it would be a lot louder.

I'm guessing you're a student? If so, kudos for chiming in and, hopefully, going to games, cheering loudly and doing your part. However, you need to exert a little peer pressure, cuz, that was (routinely is) one of the 1st sections to thin out!

Dolph was on to something when he mentioned how embarrassing it would be if GarBar finally concedes and Mediacom court is ringed by empties because the students have another pathetic showing. Don't know if it's move 'em and they'll show or prove they'll show and they'll move 'em but, from my seat and just about every TV broadcast, it points to the students needing to consistently show up and stay in order to earn the move.

In the meantime, Marge and Merle will continue to grace courtside with their hands tucked firmly 'neath their corn-fed behinds that rarely depart the seat during the game (except to beat the crowd with 4 minutes left). At least it ain't empty and the bright yellow sweater vest sure shows nicely on the tube.

Fixed that for ya. :p

Crowd support is better, but the atmosphere the last two games (granted, NW & PSU blowouts) has been embarassing. The arena may as well have been empty..

Did Iowa even HAVE a student section last night? Thought I saw a small group with some yellow shirts on, but don't know if they were students. At any rate, they were just sitting there.. Don't know why every other team's student section jumps, makes noise, etc. but ours can't? What gives?

Too bad Nebby couldn't pull that out last night - really been hoping for MD to pick up an unexpected loss. Putting them 2 games back would have been huge. We still have IU to deal with, but I like our odds of doing no worse than a tie with them, given the remaining schedules. It's Maryland I worry about most.

I stand corrected, still 6 times less population, point still stands.

1. That figure was just CR and IC. That's not taking into account Coralville (20k+) or North Liberty (14k+), or any of the surrounding small communities. You're clearing 250k without any of the people driving to Carver from places like Solon, Riverside, etc.

2. This wasn't an issue in the past. Nebraska had the same population base nearby and nobody gave a **** about Nebrasketball, while Iowa had the same "small" population base and had no problem packing the Field House or Carver to the rafters.

Yes, atmosphere could improve, as well as attendance.

But the population point still stands, I didn't include the small outlying areas either. Having an additional 800k+ people to draw from matters. Not sure this is debatable.

But hey, lets narrow the scope. Iowa City immediate area has about 75k. Lincoln immediate area has about 275k.

Miles has made nebby competitive, not great, but competitive. Combine that with a singular fanbase starved for success and 6 times the population within 45 minutes....large crowds...especially for #4 in the country. Crowd would tend to get pretty loud when your .500 team goes to the wire.

All this said...F nebby.

You are correct about the past, but things have changed pretty dramaticly for both locations since the 80's and 90's.

Not enough that there's any excuse for the crowd at Carver being as pathetic as it has been when the team is a legitimate Final Four contender. Even for big games, Carver these days doesn't hold a candle to many other atmospheres in the conference. It gets loud for a few seconds when a big play happens, but then it dies back down to its normal comatose state. When the team wasn't good, at least it was justifiable. But there's no excuse for that when the team is this good. And the population base has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Agree with everything you said. Crowd was absolutely embarrassing for the best Iowa team in 30 years. Whatever it takes to make Our home court an actual advantage needs to be done immediately. If Carver needs to be leveled and another facility built so be it. Iowa athletics pull in a butt load of money and Fran has the program trending towards the top 3rd of the conference regularly. This team is giving it all and is hella fun to watch. They deserve better.

Erect a "modern day" field house. Complete with steel floors, and steep seats where the noise travels downwards towards the court and not up up and away like Michigan stadium.

Modernize it throughout, but bring back the acoustics. And while they're at it, put in digital boards.

I sat through many games in the old field house as a student and there were times, for minutes on end, you literally couldn't hear the person next to you.

I said Alford because attendance was a problem quite a bit when he was here though when we were good Carver still got pretty full. Its hard to believe that at number 5 in the nation we're not selling out every game. Wednesday's game was boring so i get why it was silent.
