McNutt, the Nebraska defense

I was there Friday. If you weren't, it was worse live than on tv. I agree with GameFilm that the schemes were not good on offense.

Nebraska beat us basically playing our own defense against us. And played it better than we play it. Their speed at linebacker was a killer all day.

Not a good game tape if you are McNutt looking to get drafted into the next level. Dennard pretty much owned him all day long. Maybe he will be a "possession" receiver at the next level, but he drops a lot of routine balls. I like Marvin, but not sure the speed is there.

Do you guys think that game hurt his draft status?
 
Did you sit with HappyChef? I heard HappyChef may have sat behind some folks who disagreed with Mr. Chef's assessment of the team's offensive prowess.
 
Dropping catchable balls never "helps" a receivers draft status. With that said, he's got the numbers this year where he won't be hurt to badly by those drops. If anything, I think it shows how good Dennard really is. He owned the best receiver in the BIG. And yes, McNutt will be a possession receiver
 
I sat with the Chef. You would not be happy with him. We were sitting in some pretty good seats where the player families were seated. When we clocked the ball at the end of the first half, the Chef yelled out "nice job O'Keefe!"

An old man with head phones on 2 rows in front of us turned around and yelled back at the Chef, "Kirk Ferentz called that play!"

I am pretty sure the old guy was KOK's dad. A guys sitting to his right looked like he could be a brother.

I don't think he hurt his draft status that bad. The schemes were awful-What a joke. Dennard was on him like glue however, and he was one on one with him most of the day. The first half the O-line did a good job. Coker was a little slow finding the holes and hitting the correct hole at times. In the 2nd half the NEB.D shut that down because the passing game was a joke.

If I had a dollar for every time either I or someone seated near us have been on the brink of beating up the Chef for his anti-O'Keefe comments, I would be a very rich man. Chef is usually pretty well behaved when he doesn't have the high ground (our back row seats at Kinnick prevent the projectile or punch to the back of the head), so that must have been uncharacteristic.
 
I don't think one game ever hurts a player (or at least it shouldn't). There is too much data to look at to let one small sample size impact a decision regarding said player.
 
i dont know if it hurts him a ton, but there are probably a lot of corners in the nfl like dennard so he will have to improve to be a difference maker
 
No one shut down McNutt, Nebraska's pass defense was set up don't let Marvin beat us. He was double teamed on his long routes, escorted by a safety. The problem was Okeefe doesn't use that to our advanatge. Put out more recievers with some speed not two tight ends, create some match up problems. By the way do we have any underclassman recievers, I didn't see any all year other than the Pitt game.

In other words, he was shut down. 4 catches for 29 yards is hardly what I would call a solid game for a receiver of McNutt's caliber.
 
Draft stays is irrelevant until pre-draft workouts. Remember when Matt Leinart was going to be the number one pick, then he came back and was still going to be the first pick until teams worked him out?

There is just no way to really figure out draft position until players are worked out by professionals.

So, it is hard to tell what will happen with McNutt, because we really don't know how he will test out.
 
It is not just 40 time. Jumps, shuttles, etc. are also really important. That is why DJK's decent 40 time didn't get him a spot, because his overall numbers were not draft worthy.

And someone was working the phones to make sure he didn't get drafted, or sign as a free agent, or get picked up to a practice squad. He's gonna be just like Kirk Warner, though.

Wow, I need to meet both of you guys. I'm sure the kool aid intoxicated Iowa fans I sat next to, really didn't understand my comments either.

Complicated football principles like, "go into the no huddle now, when you have the wind". And, "no, don't pass, you're running the ball on them".

It is a special day for me, the season opener, when I sit in Sally Mason's box, and have to expend all of my energy to not speak the truth, and sit quietly.

The shuttles will be the interesting test, IMO. I think that for the type of receiver he'll be expected to be, he'll run solid times in that. But I wouldn't be worried about his vertical too much.

DJK was a different style of receiver, who needed faster times to have a chance. McNutt is the type of receiver who can have less than blazing times because he's a big, possession-type receiver in the NFL.

Because if you get out of line around Frau Mason, bad things will happen to you and your family.
