McGary Out Indefintely

Good for us. McGary made a huge mistake by coming back this year, he does not have lottery pick type talent and should have rode his NCAA tournament run momentum to a high pick last season.

I don't think his stock is going to be hurt that much by having stayed. He wasn't going to be a lottery pick last year anyway, and I won't be shocked if he ends up being a late first rounder, which is where I think he would have been picked if he'd left after last season.

He was a late lottery pick at the end of the year in most mocks last year. Having chronic back issues could be a big red flag to a lot of teams especially for a guy who isn't overly skilled.

This is spot on.

See Sullinger, Jared. He fell from a possible Top 5 pick after his freshman year to a middle first round pick after his sophomore year. Sullinger was a much better offensive player as a sophomore than McGary is. I wouldnt be shocked to see him fall out of the 1st round.

If I was a GM I wouldn't waste my time with him.

Who knows - this may be a (pro) career ender for him. Think Jess Settles and his back. Or even better, remember former Big Ten player of the year Ted Kitchell from Indiana back in the 1980's. Due to back trouble, he never did play in the pros.

Bad backs are troublesome things. Yes, they've made advancements on surgical techniques (I've had three back surgeries). But even the best of them can't turn a bad back into a great back.

I do hope it turns out OK for the young man.

This sucks, this weakens the Big Ten.

Yup. Anybody who thinks this is good for us is probably a Cubs fan.

Beating Michigan twice should have been our coup de grace. Now, it's just going to be expected, like playing Iowa State in football.

Just means we'll have to beat Ohio State and Michigan State twice (we're good enough to do it)

Based on what they've shown thus far, I'm not so sure that beating Michigan twice wouldn't have been expected, anyway. I certainly wouldn't expect to count sweeping them as our top accomplishment this year.

For us to move up in the B10, somebody else has to move down. That is just how it works. If that's Indiana and Michigan this year, then it's fine by me. The B10 is at worse the second best conference in the nation this year. There will be plenty of opportunities for good wins, I don't see how you can make the argument that this is bad for Iowa.

tough break for the kid

he's two years older than woody, and was probably very close to his ceiling last year (as a freshman, he was as old as dev marble as a junior)

I hope he gets his UM degree and a good career outside of basketball -- if a disk is so bad it needs surgery at 20, a long-term career in sports is probably not in your future.

"McGary has appeared in eight games this season, averaging 9.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game." Those are respectable numbers but not the type of numbers that makes or breaks a team's season. I wish the young man well in his surgery and recovery.

Dude is 6'10" and I would say he was the 2nd most impactdul player behind Burke a year ago.

Sometimes points and rebounds don't tell the whole story.

He was named preseason all American based off his play last year.

He missed time earlier in the year so perhaps he never got to 100% but this is a make or break season type injury no matter what the stats say.

Well he will be missed then. I am just used to Michigan's recruiting in basketball being so good that a pretty good post player is just itching to get a chance to play. Maybe you are right as I don't follow Michigan's recruiting very closely and they are going to be hurting under the boards.

From everything I read, he had one week where he had a full practice week and that was right before Stanford when eventually got ruled out.

When he started to play well for them last year, that is when they became the threat to win the whole thing.
