This morning, the new Iowa coach talked about flexibility, and got into detail about how he coached against Ohio State and Purdue in the last two NCAA's. Very interesting interview!

Yes, I was pretty impressed with him

I wasn't just impressed, I was downright floored.

That guy has a way of breaking down exactly what the opposition is trying to do in a way I haven't heard since Tom Davis. The way he talked about what went into beating OSU's match-up zone.....and how everything they practiced leading up to the game didn't work at all because of OSU's length and how they adjusted midstream and won the game in double OT. The way he talked about knowing that he couldn't win a "grind-it-out" game with Purdue this year. Threw in a nice little jab at Purdue as well ("they'll mug you straight out of the gym"). The guy just flat-out gets it.

After that interview, I think I had a Chris Matthews moment.

:D

On the Purdue reference; one thing that has not changed since Fran's ND days....Keady-style defense at Purdue...it must be nice to have a constant like that in- your- jock defense in a program year after year, decade after decade.

Sounds like Fran can talk a good game, now, please go get guys that can execute your plan,Fran.

Excellent post. Good Points! It was nice to hear a coach break down his approach to devising a game plan against a tough opponent. He also wasn't afraid to say that they needed to make adjustments when the original game plan wasn't working. I think there are a lot of coaches out there that are too proud to admit that in an interview situation.

I was very impressed with McCaffery in that phone interview. He seems like he gets it and that is refreshing to hear. If his talk is as good and can translate on to success on the court, then Barta might just have made a wonderful hire.

After three years of hearing and seeing a sullen, excuse making, and sad Lickliter on the bench, it is nice to hear a guy who is confident in his abilities. Of course, Alford was quite confident too when he got here. But, it is easy to say these things right now when you have not coached a game yet. But, I get the feeling Fran has more of a clue in what it is going to take to get it done at Iowa. He does not sound or look like a blind squirrel looking for nuts. And, I get the feeling, unlike Alford, he can back it up because of his experience rebuilding programs.
