McCaffrey Punking Out On His Team

I don't blame the kid. This is just a game and if he gets hurt then he misses out on big bucks. Look at what happened to that linebacker from ND. McCaffrey has to worry even more because he is a running back who are a dime a dozen in the NFL. If he blows a knee, he might go from day 2 to late day 3. Speed/agility is his main weapon and a knee injury would put a serious question mark on his value.

I do feel sorry for the kids on his team who care about this game. For seniors who might not get drafted or play another meaningful snap in their life, this decision puts them in a harder position to win their last game.

This will start a disturbing trend among CFB teams. And the bowls will continue to lose power and fan interest.

Not surprising. Tip of the iceberg is what this is. With what happened to that ND LB last yr and the overall amount money on the line your just going to see more and more of this. ( I wonder how much impact the media has on this. They sure have talked about it a lot) A part of me thinks why even come back for your senior year then... Let's advance the what if game. What if OSUs or Bama's top 6 or 7 players all decided to skip out on the playoffs? I don't see much of a difference. The risks they are taking is the same. They just value playing for the championship more as opposed to some other bowl that 'don't matter' Well to what extent does a championship matter to the kid? Honestly if the thought creeps into your head that you'd leave early instead of playing in the Sun Bowl then why's playing for the championship worth risking your millions on? They won't get paid a nickel more for that unless they sell their ring...

Good. The bowl system is so bloated now, with the goal being of these fat-cats to make money at the expense of young football players, even from 5-7 teams now. I don't blame a kid who could make millions of dollars from bailing from one of these exhibition games to avoid a career-ending injury.

It's the SUN Bowl, a non event.
Then just get rid of bowl games. Make an 8 team playoff and be done with it.

You know why no one watches the Pro Bowl? Because it means nothing and the best players don't play in it. Fournette and McCaffrey are getting the ball rolling on the same thing happening in college football.

Most wouldn't be where they're at without their teammates and coaching staffs. I get your point but they're also quitting on the people who have supported them the most.

I'm probably in the minority here, but as a college player, this is a scummy move. Sure, he has to take care of his own interests first, but what about his teammates? The guys who he has grown with and competed with for 3 years all depend on him, and now he's going to bail on them in their final game of the season? This is a horrible move for the future of bowl games, and I would not like to see it become a common thing. Just my 2 cents.

Those coaching staffs will want to change the rules if this snowballs I bet. Think about it who's to say that just the 1st round type of players have to do this? Those 4th and 5th round level guys have careers to protect too. They are risking the same thing the 1st rounders are in terms of health. And they maybe even more so could improve their draft stock by not playing in a bowl game and working on their 'draft stock drills' for a lack of a better term. What's one more game where they already have seasons worth of tape on or taking an extra month to begin training for the 40 yard dash and all those other drills that have so little to do with football yet seem to have such a big deal with evaluating them?

What bowl and/or how many bowls there are is not the question at hand, rather it is his decision to quit and not fulfill his commitment. IMHO his quitting disrespects the bowl itself and those fans that spent money to see him & cheer for the whole team. Why don't everyone interested in the NFL quit with him to also get ready.

If this could be considered a learning moment, I don't believe many in the position of teaching right from wrong, would side with quitting. Unless this was golf, if a player is so far ahead in a stroke play match, he/she should be able to quit and head to get ready for the next major event.

sorryhawkfnntn....i missed your post, but we agree at least.

This will happen more and more every year. The Bowl games are meaningless and will start to be treated as such

Stanford was out of contention for the playoff or conference championship a couple of weeks before the end of season. Should McCaffrey has bailed then? Why not? If you're going to quit on your team...what's the diff.

Nothing like pizzing on all the people who helped you get where you are.

If there is one thing everyone here can probably agree on, it's that this is going to snowball out of control in the next few years. 20 year olds are a trend-following bunch to say the least, and it won't be long before you see the first three rounds of projections sitting out.
