McCaffery Talks Big Ten Hoops (transcript)

Does anyone look at this team and see the potential for a 16-16 (6-12) type of season. I mean I think thats optomistic, and probably the ceiling, but I don't see it as being out of the question.

I feel good about the core of Gatens, Paine, May, Cartwright and Cole. If Brommer really steps up (I think he's got that ability), and if we get a solid contribution out of a freshman or two I think we can be competitive.

Am I dreaming?

But he's going to get a chance to play more, and he's going to be able to get a chance to settle down. He never had that opportunity. If you watched him, if you watched any tape like I did, watched the games last year, he was kind of always on edge and he never settled down.

And he would make some ill advised mistakes, but you're going to see somebody now that I'm going to let him play through that and I think our style of play will help him. And you're going to see somebody who is a legitimate post player in this league.

I love this. I think Brommer was under utilized last year and he's going to surprise a lot of people. I think the above statement was true for most of our players too. They played with the defense in front of them and the coach looking over their shoulder too much. I thought Brommer should have seen more minutes last year and that Lick pretty much screwed with the kids head when he left him in and he clanked those free throws early in his freshman career. If this kid can gain some confidence he will be a damn good player.

Thanks for the link, Jon. Interesting read after what others posted on another thread about practice observations. Coach says he expects Basabe to start while others seemed to think he was really struggling. Maybe he had a bad day that day, but I'm more encouraged to hear that he's likely starting. Also happy to read the Brommer has made strides. Gatens should be back in good time. Other threads had him out for possibly the season!

Great speech for Coach Mac! the more i listen to him the more he sounds like Ferentz, I sure hope he gets the BB program turned around, really seems like a positive leader.

While on one hand, I try to keep in mind that every coach is going to sound positive on media day and talk about how they like their team, but Fran seems to be happy with the way things are coming along. I know we will take our lumps, but I'm curious to see what players blossom this year (Brommer?) and how the team comes together as the year goes along. Also sounds like Gatens may be back sooner than most of us were thinking, which of course is good news. I'm ready for some hoops!

I was hoping to hear Archie's name when he talked about 4's and 5's but I guess its good to hear that Melsahn is projected to start. With May at the 3, Melsahn at the 4 and Cole at the 5 our bigs should get up and down the court well.

I also am interested to see Payne and Cartwright on the floor at the same time. That adds a whole new dimension of quickness compared to last year. I think this is an interesting team that will have an opportunity to win some conference games.

I agree exactly with how Fran described Brommer's performance last year. He would have a flash of nice play, then make a mistake or a foul and be out of there. Never settled in. I thought that Lick just never showed any patience with players in general, but Brommer specifically.

REally like hearing that Matt should be back in a month.

FM talks very positively.

He also talked like he thought Fuller was staying and we would keep Larson and the guard recruit whose name now escapes me that went to Wisconsin. I am not calling him a liar, I'm just saying he seems to error on the side of being optimistic at this point in his tenure.

I like him too, and I think he will succeed. But we'll have to see it on the court. We can't just chalk up wins in year one, and then year two and three before they are there or before there is any positive reason to think they will be there.

I like my team? What is he supposed to say, "I don't like my team?" The comments about Brommer are also telling. He didn't say Brommer has gotten better, he said he has never been comfortable, but he is going to be able to work through that. Translation: I have no one else so I hope he turns it around.

Brommer looked like he was too concerned with running "the offense" last year. I think the good thing about Fran, according to the players, is that he allows guys to freelance a bit and take shots when they are open rather than slow it down and run 30 secs off the shot clock everytime.

It kind of reminds me of Hoosiers when they have to make 4 passes every time down the floor or whatever it was and then the coach finally let the players play their game. At least I hope that is the case and it works out for the better.

Basketball does not have to be a complicated game. When you have a bunch of young players it makes it especially hard to run a "system" type of game like Lickliter wanted. This is a young team that should be able to get up and down the court. They have very good athletes at pretty much every position.
