McCaffery, Hawks Prepare for Opener (transcript)

Continues to say all the right things. I really hope things work out as he's someone I'd love to have at the head of our program for a long time.

Couldn't agree more Sheagle.

It might take a while to get all the recruits he needs but I believe Fran's approach will lead the Hawks back to the top of the conference and into national prominence once again. What was really great to hear were the comments about only taking players that were going to be highly successful.

Watched the first half online Sunday afternoon, before the wife thought I should finish up the lawn work prior to the weather changing (GRRRRRRRR), but I have no doubt we will make some games at CHA this year. I know it was an exhibition against an over matched opponent but the style got me really excited. Reminded me a bit of the old John Wooden quotes: Go fast but don't hurry!!!

I apologize for the comparison but Fran reminds me a lot of Rick Pitino in his first year at Kentucky. They had no expectations and a rag tag roster of role players(including walk ons). They shocked a lot of people by finishing .500 and scoring some upsets along the way. They pressed on defense and ran on offense. Kentucky fans around here still remember that team fondly. They hustled and had fun. This Iowa team could accomplish the same thing or even exceed it.

Love it confident but not cocky. Seems a little blount at times. Good interview Jon. So in regards to possibly starting Cartwright, was he planning on starting Payne and Cartwright with McCabe coming off the bench?

Love this: If I wasn’t 100% certain they were going to be impact players, we weren’t offering them a scholarship, and I had plenty. I could have gone in and tried to sign a couple. I know we need a big guy. But I wasn’t going to sign a big guy that I didn’t think could be a good player in the Big Ten just to sign a big body. I was willing to wait.

Man, reading that you just get the sense that this guy knows his shi*. I can't say i thought that with Alford and Lick.

I think Fran is going to communicate roles better than Lick. Fran does seem brutally honest at time with his player assessment, but it is good for the kid. I imagine he tells kids essentially "you can't do this, you don't have that skill, but these are the skills you do have, and this is what we need you to do." Understanding your role and what you can do well on the basketball court is important to playing well.

Anyone else think Matt should just sit for a week?
“I’ll give it a go and see how it feels in practice Friday,’’ said Gatens, a junior guard who averaged 12.3 points last season. “The doctor is not sure how it’s going to feel and what to expect. It’s not 100 percent risk free by going out there, but if I think I can try, I’ll give it a go.’’

Even if i knew we would lose without him, i say sit until its 90%. Why risk months of additional rehab, or god forbid the entire season?

“I’ll just keep my fingers crossed that nothing happens,’’

As a player I would much rather have a guy like Fran tell me like it is and know that I need to step up certain areas of my game but I can still get a bit of court time playing to my strengths as long as I sprint the floor and fill a role.

love his candor. i'm actually excited about iowa basketball for the first time since the NWern St game.

Wow. Fran impresses the hell out of me. Even if the wins don't show up this year, I'm extremely confident he's going to send the program in the right direction.

So, Fran is pretty much the exact opposite of Lickliter. That's probably a good thing. I can't wait until Sunday.
