McCaffery among lowest paid coaches

If Iowa makes the Tournament next year Barta should adjust Fran's salary to 1.6-2.0 Million. My biggest fear is that Iowa does really good next year and a big job opens up where they can offer a coach a lot of money. I could see Fran bolting if Barta doesn't pony up.

False. I know someone close to the situation and word is he absolutely loves it in Iowa City.

There is one job that he bolts for, and that is Notre Dame.

There is no way McCaffery leaves Iowa City for South Bend. South Bend is a dump.

Remember Pete Gillen! Gillen was a long-time assistant at Notre Dame. When Digger resigned it was assumed that Gillen would leave Xavier for Notre Dame. However, he refused to interview for the job. As the story goes Gillen's wife refused to move back to South Bend from Cincinnati.

Have you ever been to South Bend?

Fran has 4 years left on his original deal. I say if we see decent progress again next year, they tear his deal up and give him a new 5 year deal,so that he always can tell recruits on signing day that he will be their coach thru all 4 years. Make it a revolving deal, where a year is tacked on the end automatically, with a buyout that tapers down for that last year..something like that....in case of termination.

When Fran goes to sign his 2013 class on Nov.15, 2012 he can tell his signees,he is contractually locked up thru their run at Iowa, truthfully. I think that is the only way to really operate.

We certainly do not want to lose Fran over money, tho.

As soon as the Hawks are done giving Lickliter some spendy cash, Fran will have led the Hawks to the NCAA Tournament and he'll get a handsome raise...my inner Gary Barta already has this all drawn up and ready for Fran's signature...

Well Fran beat Minnesota twice. Kurt cant beat Minnesota. So lets move some money around. Thats winning Kurt.

Oh yeah!?!? Let's see Melsahn and Whitey and Co. line up against the vaunted Gophers in that football stadium of theirs that, for some stupidassed reason doesn't have heated turf...IN MINNESOTA!?!?...and smack those critters in the bucked toothed mouth! Then we'll see what's up!

I believe Iowa still has two more years of Lickliter's buyout to pay at $600K per year, since he was fired with four years remaining on his contract. If they're going to renegotiate Fran's contract, they likely won't be able to do much with it until after they're done paying Lick.

While I think it's good to have 4 or 5 years on a coach's contract at all times for the purposes of recruiting, I really don't believe there's such a thing as a "4 year guarantee" that you can make to recruits. Coaches can get fired, retire (for whatever reason), or bolt for another job at the drop of a hat. But yeah, if there's only 2 years left on the deal, recruits would have to wonder.

But I agree - you don't want to play it cheap and lose a good coach because we don't want to pay him. Not when the UofI is something like 15th nationally in Athletic Department revenue. There's no excuse for not paying our coaches when they are winning, and earning their salary.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Fran's contract have a really heavy dose of insentives.

It's all relative. I don't remember what McCaffrey made at Siena, but I would guess it was around $400K-$500K. So he comes here and doubles his money and has a chance to be closer to his wife's family in MN, have his kids grow up in the Midwest and rebuild a program he knows will have the support of the fans. We had the largest crowd of the NIT for the Dayton game, so imagine the support if he gets us to the dance.

Programs aren't going to shell out big money for McCaffrey based on getting us into the NIT. I am sure he knows that an NCAA bid = pay raise and if he doesn't get us there, he has no room to ask for a new contract. Not many programs withthe cash to give him a big bump in pay are going to be enticed by "two time NIT participant" on a resume.

Iam not worried about Iowa making the NCAA's next season, as for money i fell the big money doners will pony up the extra money to keep Fran around,
Fran is 53 or close to it, the only youngster on the roster is Francis, and i expect Speraw and Dillard to retire here, and hopefully Fran builds it to the successful level he can turn it over to Francis.
next year is solid, 3 BT all freshmen team nominees return , May, Basabe and White, who just was named to the Freshmen AA Team, Iowa returns 6 out of the top 8 scorers, and bring in a Top 20 class according to ESPN.
we lost 4 players but only one major contributor in Gatens.

What a colossal waste of money. Only the U.S. Govt. wastes more than that.
