McCabe...

He's on a strict nutrition and training regimen to lose weight and get quicker in the off season. I suspect we will see less of him in the post next year...take advantage of his outside shot more. I hadn't seen this anywhere and thought I would share. No...I don't have a link. I was in Sioux City all weekend and talked to some people in the know.

Makes sense. We are adding a big beefy power forward in Kyle Meyer, and a long forward in Uthoff,so it becomes less and less likely that Zach will be playing in the paint a bunch this season. We need him to hone that 3 pt shot, and get quick enough to play the three in the league. Glad to hear he is still extremely motivated to do what it takes to get minutes.

I think his mins will be cut down alot regardless of how he tries to mold his body or even his game. If he's in shape and can knock down the open 3 he'll play some. How much will depend on the flow of the game (how Basabe Utoff White and Olaseni are playing) and foul trouble. That front court is so so deep that even the hottest guys won't play big big mins. I hope he does well he's an Iowa kid that plays with grit and effort. He's not pretty and I think even tho coach gets on him and frustrated with his play and silly fouls at times he loves his overall effort and contributions.

I think it is a good move for him. He is one of the team's better 3 pt shooters and could use the extra quickness to help create room for his shot. He also has a toughness to him that won't hinder his defense much in the post by losing the weight.

Please clarify this statement by explaining when the last time you saw McCabe play defense and I don't mean taking a charge. If Zach has been playing defense the last three years, I must have missed it.

McCabe for whatever reason couldn't hit a 3 to save his life until very late in the year; hope that changes this season, Iowa needs all the outside shooters they can get. Two unproven commodities adding the the sharp shooting Iowa had last year doesn't make me feel that good about it improving overnight in this offseason as a team.

You're right as usual. Coach McCaffery is well known as being a coach that doesn't require his players to play any D when they're on the floor. In fact, he encourages it. It speeds up the game. Nice call.

Another sportSTALEnt post read and another few seconds of my life wasted. When will I learn...

Does this mean we see less of White at the 3?

More than likely. White is also on a strict weight (gain) diet and workout regiment. White's game takes a notch up when he gets closer to the basket. Uthoff will see that time at the 3, hopefully with a mix of Jok. Sounds like McCabe as well.

I'm glad McCabe is taking steps to be as good as he can be. That's all I expect of any player on the team. Work hard and be the best player possible. It's not humanly possible to do anything more.

Also, taking a charge is done almost exclusively on the defensive end of the floor. If that doesn't count then we probalby should throw out steals, blocked shots, etc. How are we even going to measure defense having taken away all of the defensive stats?

It's part of defense. But his all around defense in the post isn't good. It's not for a lack of effort by any stretch; anybody who watches McCabe knows he busts his *** in there. He struggles to stay with quicker posts, and he can get pushed around by the stronger ones. His attitude has some value, as does his outside shot when he's hitting. Which is why Fran keeps him in there. But let's remember that McCabe saw a pretty significant drop in minutes this year. He played a ton last year out of necessity.

Also, defensive statistics really don't tell the whole story. There are a lot more little things that good defenders do that won't show up in a box score than there are on the offensive end (hedging screens, good footwork in the paint, help side defense, contesting shots, etc.).

He has a role on this team, but defensive stopper ain't it.

Well that explains why he was hanging out with Ben Brust this weekend. Maybe he got aome tips on how to be skinny.

His constant bashing of McCabe in response to the Ogelsby bashing is very odd.

Okay, I simply asked how one would consider McCabe losing weight is going to affect his defensive game.

It isn't like 10 threads after every loss blaming one player for the loss or saying one player is the reason that Iowa shoots poorly from 3-pt range or saying one player who is the 8th player off the bench is Iowa's margin of winning or losing. If you were to do a count of how many posts were related to Oglesby during the past season compared to any other player it wouldn't be close and on top of it the positive to negative ratio would be maybe 5% positive and I don't think there is another player that would have that disparity.

McCabe plays hard, I get that, but playing hard and putting effort in don't always mean positive results. When McCabe is on the floor you see him a lot and as I have said before there is a reason for it. McCabe takes a lot of shots, if and only if, he hits his first one. Defensively McCabe averaged more fouls per game than any other Iowa player...again, but he dropped it from 3.4 pg last year to 2.6 pg this year.
The issue with McCabe defensively is this: He doesn't move his feet and can't contest shots. He takes more charges than anyone because he is rendered nothing but ineffective defensively otherwise. If you think I am bashing him I am not.

What is the difference between me saying that and Oglesby was the worst Power Six conference shooter this year. If you can't see what McCabe can't do above what he does...I am sorry for that.
McCabe is an effort player and when he is shooting well he needs to be on the floor; that is no different than Oglesby...they really aren't much different.

Stop bashing on McCabe...

1. He could kick your a$$.

2. He's going to be quick enough to do it even if you run, VERY soon.

+1 One difference between him and Oglesby is Josh is a decent defensive player.

this reminds me of a year ago post that Eric May wasn't any good, had no value, couldn't shoot very well, and should never see the floor except in blowouts........
