McCabe tonight...

McCabe was in Council Bluffs tonight, so I went to check him out. He got in some foul trouble early, and his team was up big early, so I didn't get to see a whole lot. I am sure a close game could have given me a better look at his game. But, from what I saw:

He has a nice stroke from behind the arc, and I really believe his quick and high release will serve him well at Iowa. Undoubtedly his stroke is something Lick and staff really like. He is also very active offensively. He moves very well without the ball, and is a very good passer. I think he has the offensive skill set to be a very good player.

Defensively his is also very active. Heelan ran a half court, trapping defense that was relentless. As a team they are very good in the half court set. They are long and athletic and really cause a lot of problems. Again, Zach was very active and worked very hard. Unfortunately, he was never in a position defensively that could give me an idea of how he will guard at the next level. He does work very hard and is very active offensively and defensively.

Overall, I think his mentality and skill set is very well suited for Lick's system. He can handle it, shoot it, pass it and moves well. Defensively is works hard and is active.

Now, the concerns I have. Going into next year I really question if he has a position at the Big 10 level. Although he is probably a legit 6'7, he is very lean - very thin arms and upper body. I don't have a lot of confidence in him being physical enough to play the 4 spot, and probably not athletic enough to play the three. If he puts on weight and muscle he could be a very good 4 type player. If he doesn't, I question how effective he will be.

No question he has the skill set and mental capabilities. If Lick and crew can develop him physically he becomes a very good player. If not, I am worried.

This will be worthless in the "Butler System".

It is funny how a post about a Hawk recruit instantly becomes a rip Lick thread. Some of you are comical!!! Keep it up, I love being amused!

Sounds like Robbie Hummel as a freshman.

Is he still playing point guard? I get the idea from your post that he's back to playing forward.

Thanks for the update on Zach.

Some of us on here do appreciate these updates, while others, i.e. - Cliche, use every possible opportunity to turn a positive into a negative.

From what I saw McCabe didn't play much point guard. Heelan spent most of the night running out after getting a turnover. Heelan has a junior kid (Malloy I believe) who was very good last night. He is probably division 1 athletically, but I am guessing his offensive skills probably are not. But, he dominated the game. I didn't realize until I read the article that Malloy had 35 last night. He had a very impressive dunk. Again, it was tough to tell how far out his offensive game could go with the way the game went.

Do you think McCabe redshirts next year?

I have thought about the possibility of Zach redshirting. I would doubt it at this point. The 1-3 positions seem to have a lot of depth next year, but not necessarily at the 4 and 5. Out of necessity I think he probably won't. I wouldn't have a problem if he did.

Thanks for the update... keep 'em coming if you get a chance to see any more of his games!
