McCabe was in Council Bluffs tonight, so I went to check him out. He got in some foul trouble early, and his team was up big early, so I didn't get to see a whole lot. I am sure a close game could have given me a better look at his game. But, from what I saw:
He has a nice stroke from behind the arc, and I really believe his quick and high release will serve him well at Iowa. Undoubtedly his stroke is something Lick and staff really like. He is also very active offensively. He moves very well without the ball, and is a very good passer. I think he has the offensive skill set to be a very good player.
Defensively his is also very active. Heelan ran a half court, trapping defense that was relentless. As a team they are very good in the half court set. They are long and athletic and really cause a lot of problems. Again, Zach was very active and worked very hard. Unfortunately, he was never in a position defensively that could give me an idea of how he will guard at the next level. He does work very hard and is very active offensively and defensively.
Overall, I think his mentality and skill set is very well suited for Lick's system. He can handle it, shoot it, pass it and moves well. Defensively is works hard and is active.
Now, the concerns I have. Going into next year I really question if he has a position at the Big 10 level. Although he is probably a legit 6'7, he is very lean - very thin arms and upper body. I don't have a lot of confidence in him being physical enough to play the 4 spot, and probably not athletic enough to play the three. If he puts on weight and muscle he could be a very good 4 type player. If he doesn't, I question how effective he will be.
No question he has the skill set and mental capabilities. If Lick and crew can develop him physically he becomes a very good player. If not, I am worried.
