McCabe best of the Freshman?

I had a chance to watch all three of our Freshman play in a scrimmage and the one that impressed me the most was McCabe.

He is probably the least talked about of the 3 Freshman but I have a gut feeling he could end up being the one that makes the quickest impact to this team. His play and body are much more developed than I would have expected for an incoming Freshman.

What are others impressions of him?

Im not sure there are more than a handful of us that could pick him out of a police lineup let alone seen him play.

Good Iowa fan-favorite bench support type player. Iowa will need about four of these types to provide the necessary depth to run this system.

Right now the starters will most likely be:

Cole
Basabe
Payne
May
Gatens

The strong backups will be:
McCabe
Cartright
Marble

However, I expect the minutes these backups get will not look that different from those of the perimeter players starting in this system.

After that it gets ugly

So we need more guys like McCabe for depth. That doesn't mean he wouldn't be able to develop into a starter over time. But, with FM's system, your 6-8 guys are really important.

His ceiling is probably the lowest of the freshman

I would say Marble and Masabe both have a chance to be pretty good.

It may be correct that he could make the most immediate impact. I haven't seen Basabe or Marble live, but I have seen McCabe play. He's a great shooter and a pretty good passer. So, with any ability around him, he should be able to step in earlier than raw athletic talent which is what the other two seem more like.

Raw talent and skills McCabe isn't as good as Marble or Basabe.

He's ahead of them right now, but if Fran can coach them up, Masabe and Marble have a higher ceiling.

I've heard Marble has really opened eyes.

I've only seen McCabe play a time or two, but I have NOT been impressed whatsoever. Hopefully he can develop his game and his physicality as well.

Cause he is white? ;)

Does it make you feel better that you troll around on a Hawkeye Basketball forum during football season and bash on Iowa??? I wonder why we don't see you post more on the football boards?......oh wait, now I remember, ISU football is irrelevant.

Just curious, where does Larson fit best and how soon do people think he'll begin to contribute? We've heard quite a bit about the others, but not about him...

i am not sure why anyone would think that marble is better than mccabe at this point. no one who has watched any of their games or scrimmages could make this assessment. mccabe and basabe looked fairly similar to me. Zach has really filled out since high school.

I had a chance to see McCabe play a couple of times over the last two years and I am impressed with his game. The people that watched at state last year were not seeing him at his best because Heelan had him playing a lot of point guard out of necessity.

He is a talented kid that has good strength and a great work ethic. He will find his place with Iowa and I look forward to see him develop.
