Maybe they're keeping the lights on, but these pop up ads are annoying

If you're using chrome on your desktop, download the adblock extension. It prevents all of that crap from covering your screen

If you're using Android, download a browser app called "Brave". It does the same thing

If you're using an Iphone, I feel sorry for you

Not only are the ads annoying, but I haven't been able to change my avitar for a while. I also have noticed that the no one else has had a new one either, since around October or November.

Oh well, it's my smiling daughter for the time being, which isn't a bad thing. Much better than a net full of fish.

Anyone else had trouble changing their avitar lately?

I just downloaded the adblock ext for Chrome. It works great, thanks Mopkins. Sorry Jon and Rob, but the ads were over the top.

yea the ads do stink a bit. I started using firefox on mobile, believe I might have had to add adblock extension but much better then android chrome.

While I think adblockers are fine for stuff like Yahoo, ESPN or CBS, I don't think you guys should run them on this website because they deprive the owner of funds. I get that the ads are an annoyance and that Arizona one is particularly absurd, but everything has a cost and the moderate inconvenience of those ads is a cost of viewing HN, so I hope you guys reconsider running them when you visit here. The revenue model on these websites has completely collapsed (the old Rivals and Scout model was $100 a month for premium access) and the ads are the only way to keep the lights on. I guess what I'm saying is "please help keep the lights on."

Maybe they can offer a no-ads membership option.

I doubt many would sign up. But if you can't fork over a few bucks a month to solve what you see as a problem, then it's probably not that big of a problem.

Yes, adblockers on 'small market' websites are self defeating. And if less people were running them, you'd probably see less intrusive ads.

Then there should be some quality control as to the size and annoyance level of the ads. When it interferes with the content of the page then it isn't doing the website any good.

I'll agree here, the one add takes up 1/2 the page. I don't even know why the add is. I just wait for the X to come up so I can see what's behind it.
