Maybe a little overkill...but who cares

Mike Gesell is the engine who makes the hawkeyes go. I have been on record from day one of this year that Mike is, in MY OPINION, the best player on this team. As announcers have said he just does so many things that do not show up in the box score. I love this kid and you are going to see starting late this season, when tournament hype gets really stoked, that Mike gets some national love for being one of the top PG's in the nation. Kid is a blue collar player...

May not be the best athletically, but other than Marble, nobody's more valuable. I agree Steve, I love how he plays.....fast fast and fast, and is absolutely fearless on going inside....gets the foul or a foul/and 1. Great Hawkeye.

Is this Dan Dakich?

I agree, I have been posting (not singing) his praises since beginning of Big 10 last year,

He tips a lot of balls, he sets up his teammates, he scores if it is needed.

I think next year he will absorb about 4 points missing from marble leaving and be about a 14 pt a game scorer if needed.

Gesell is the main reason why I think Iowa will be fine next season even with Marble graduating.

Mike isn't elite athletically but is still the best athlete on the team other than Olaseni. He doesn't look all that athletic on offense for some reason but he is extremely quick on defense.

I think he's a very hard worker. The successful return from the the foot and hand injuries prove how dedicated he was in rehab. Looks like he's been hitting the weights pretty hard too. The guy is stronger than he looks. I'd say he's a premier guard right now.

As hoops expert Jon Rothstein said in a tweet this morning "Mike Gesell is the gas in Iowa's engine. Ran the team from wire to wire against Michigan. 10 points, 8 assists, just 1 TO. Solid PG."

He's not our best player, IMO. But I've felt for awhile now that he's maybe our most important player. When he plays well, this team is nearly unstoppable. When he doesn't, it shows in the team's performance.

He's Iowa's Naadir Tharpe.
