Matt VandeBerg on Track to Lead Inexperienced WR Corps

Matt VandeBerg is back to 100 percent health, but Iowa's top receiver believes he's on track to arrive there before the season kicks off:

He's a very good player, and his presence will attract a of double teams. This will also open things up for all of Iowa's other receiving threats. This year's offense will be a good one.

I like JVB a lot but he’s not one that scares teams into doubling him… He might get doubled here and there depending on the route he’s running and the coverage of the D. But if your saying he’s going to get double teamed out there like a Randy Moss would have been out of being scared of him I don’t see it. I’ll give you this. If JVB is healthy and plays well (along with QB whomever that ends up being) that’s what it’ll take for offense to be good. Because if the passing game is anywhere close to what it was last year they’ll struggle against some of the better teams they’ll be facing this year…

He'll end up Iowa's all-time reception leader (174) and could break the single season record as well (82), although he doesn't need to do the latter to break the former. He may not be the fastest, but he knows how to get open and catches the damn ball.

Speed is actually one of his best assets. A couple of years ago one of the Iowa coaches (I think it was Kennedy) said MVB ran as well as anyone in their receiver room; that was a room that contained 2 4.3 guys (Tevaun Smith and McCarron), and someone everyone assumed he was a freak athlete (Willies).

Agree. He looked really fast in the first 3 games last year before he got hurt. We need him healthy all year.

I didn't realize he was that far up on the all-time reception list. If you would have asked me I would have guessed he had somewhere between 90-100 career receptions. He won't get the single season record unless Iowa goes back to throwing a ton of bubble screens. If he stays healthy he will probably end up catching 60-70 passes this year.
