Anyone else hear the prop Millen gave to Iowa during the Jets game tonight? He said something to the effect of "Ferentz is running on of the best programs in the country down there at Iowa. If you get a guy from there you know he will be fundamentally sound and very tough." Then on cue Greene makes a 7 yard run dragging 4 Bengals with him.

<sarcasm>He sounds horribly misinformed. I've been closely reading posts on this board over the last month or so and so I can tell you Ferentz is one of the worst coaches in the country, doesn't care about his players, and just generally needs a good look in the mirror.</sarcasm>

Quoting Matt Millen on player evaluation is pretty much like quoting your 6-year-old daughter. Actually, I am more inclined to believe the daughter. We have seen what Millen did to a team - your daughter would probably do better ;)

I saw that, Theisman is still terrible though.

Also thought it was really cool to see Millen on the "message" from Afghanistan that was actually his son. Good stuff.

This is funny. real funny.

Best laugh I've had in a while. :)

With the second pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the Detroit Lions select...Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, wide receiver, University of Iowa.

Interesting thing, though, IAHawkFan.

Millen wanted to pick other players in the high rounds when the Lions took bust picks. However, the owner wanted to take the players they ended up taking. I heard a Michigan sportwriter on a sports radio station one time a while back and he said that not too many people really understood that. It's one of those things where you do what the owner wants and you take the bullets like a good soldier for the decision that really wasn't yours. That's what a GM does in those situations and then they try to make it work as best they can. The writer said if he would have gotten to take the guys he wanted it would have been quite a different story.

Believe me, I know about meddling owners and their GMs that take the blame. I live in Kansas City and the Royals had a knowledgable GM that wanted to sign Johnny Damon and lock him up before he had a shot at free agency and the ownership balked at a really good deal over an extra million dollars they wanted. When ownership said they should wait until after the season (this was around the all-star break the year BEFORE he was eligible for free agency) Damon went on a tear and hit like .380 the rest of the season and they decided they would not do a deal with the Royals and they had to trade him. They also wanted to lock up a player to a big contract and directed the GM to sign Mike Sweeney instead of Carlos Beltran. Nice move. They also directed the GM to trade Jermaine Dye for whoever they could get and it was one of the worst deals in the history of baseball.

This same ownership group never spent in free agency and supposedly wanted to build through the draft. But they never paid for players in the draft, dodging players that Scott Boras had as clients AND they never paid bonuses above $1000 dollars for players past the third or fourth round and never developed players in Latin America or invested in scouts to turn over rocks to find players. They do all of these things now with the new GM and they don't meddle in his business. Now the Royals, by everyone's concensus in baseball, have the best farm system in baseball.

That is the sort of thing Millen was up against in Detroit. He is a really good analyst and was one of the best before he took the Detroit job. People in the loop will know these things, but from the outside it is difficult to see, to be sure.

I listened to the MSU game Millen did the color work for, and when he just discussed x's and o's he was good...but when he went on and on and on and on about how much character Dantonio had, being a man of great faith, quality person, etc., I could've puked. And this was the game Dantonio let Rucker join the team and play a day or 2 after getting out of jail. Millen would've been better not saying anything re Dantonio, but instead he tries sticking up for him and comes off looking like a bigger chump than what most already considered him.

Millen is an idiot. If I hear him talking about our speed deficiency one more time, and how Chaney is the only guy with any speed on the receiving corp. Are you kidding me. McNutt and DJK both run 4.5 or so. Our corners aren't fast and since our safeties are white, well they must be slow.

I heard that. Pretty sweet. Especially considering that I caught about literally 4 minutes of that game.

Millen is a pathetic announcer. But nowhere near as bad as he was as GM for the Lions.
He and Kevin McHale have to be the two worst GMs in the history of professional sports. Yet, somehow they both land "analyst" jobs in their respective sports.

You guys are wrong about Millen. He is respected in the NFL -- still.

No one can turn the Lions around. They are a lost cause.

Except Jim Schwartz. You're a fool for that comment and obviously not paying attention to what he's doing in Detroit right now. They're much, much closer to being respectable than they have in a long time, which is saying something considering the Millen clusterF. Schwartz's record isn't that great, but he's definitely on the right path and has that team headed in the right direction.

And weren't you also the one that started the "we have 10 yrs of data" thread pointing out Ferentz averages 8-4 and that you don't want him to change anything? Yeah, your brilliance is illuminating...or not.
